I am not sure if BOF will have any adverse effects on people with high blood pressure, but slow, deep and smooth pranayama sessions are a very good and safe substitutes. Probably people with high blood pressure should first start thinking of lowering the blood pressure. A very simple way to do this is to do stretching, and yoga offers a lot of poses which involve good amount of stretching. Stretching improves the circulation of blood in the body part which is being stretched. How? All the blood vessels, veins and arteries are stretched and dilated in the stretched muscle. This forces and squeezes the blood through these muscles, thereby lowering the blood pressure. Now, how to stretch better and be more flexible? The bones carry nearly 60% of water. So drinking lots of water helps in doing the stretches more easily. A combination of slow-deep breathing cycles, yoga stretches and drinking more water might significantly reduce blood pressure. gayathri Health - Feel better, live better http://health. I analyzed about this a little more and it seems to me that, perhaps, people with high BP should refrain from doing BOF. The logic goes like this -- the blood is not moving around quickly enough through the veins and arteries when there is high BP, which means it takes longer for the oxygen to be transported to different parts of the body and energize them. So, many body parts are probably under-energized. Quick exertion of the stomach muscles during BOF might be more demanding on the system. Besides, the long pause between the inhalation and exhalation cycles in BOF will make this more difficult. Still, I would not call it a sin when BOF is done when there is high BP, but maybe it is best to experiment with different breathing techniques and sense the comfort level associated with them, and stick to a comfortable more relaxing and efficient breathing technique while working on lowering the BP. gayathri Health - Feel better, live better http://health.
