I came across this today and I thought i would share:

When it is impossible for anger to arise within you, you find no

outside enemies anywhere.

An outside enemy exists only if there is anger inside.

An idea which crossed my mind at one point is that if we eliminate the

enemies within ourselves(greed, lust, jealousy, anger...etc) then we will

experience no enemies in the outside world. When we reach this state, any

difficulty which we encounter will be accepted as part of our prosperity.

Bingo!!!!!!!You win for having the best thought. Choose any prize through any

door and take whoever you want with you for as long as you

want........that is how prosperous that thought is.

The five powers are Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha, and Ahankara (ie Sex, Anger,

Wishes, Attachment, and Pride). It is very difficult to "eliminate" these

powers. Therefore, rather than trying to fight with Nature, Swami Dev

Murti Ji suggests that we should use these five powers for a good purpose.

For example, sex is used only for bringing up a family, anger is used only

to protect someone else's (not your own ego) rights, etc, etc, etc.

The below is the conversation between a Buddhist Abbot and his class

from the movie "The Cup". You can rent it.

Abbot: Can we cover the earth in leather so it's soft wherever we

go?

Student: No.

Abbot: So what can we do?

Student: Cover our feet in leather?

Abbot: Yes, covering our feet in leather is equal to covering the

earth with leather. Likewise, enemies are as limitless as space. All

enemies cannot possibly be overcome. Yes, if one can just overcome

hatred, this will be equal to overcoming all enemies. All that is

unsatisfactory in this world… all the fear and suffering that exists…

clinging to the "I" has created it. What am I to do with this great

Demon? To release myself from harm…. and to free all others from their

suffering… let me give myself away… and love others as I love myself. If

a problem cannot be solved… why be unhappy? And if it cannot be solved…

what is the use of being unhappy? *

*Attachment to unhappiness

The use of being unhappy is to let go of the feelings so that they

can be replaced by joy! To be unhappy is experienced by all, to remain

unhappy is experienced by those who identify with the unhappiness. It

is, as

the abbot says, identification with unhappiness that makes it persist.

Dharam,

What a timely piece ........ If a problem cannot be solved --- why be unhappy ?

And if it cannot be solved what is the use of being unhappy. ..........

I've been so frustrated with my progress. So desperately unhappy with the

results of all my efforts.

so tired of always having to do everything without support or help. This comes

like an answer, a bit of comfort just when I need it most. thank you,

Sat Nam,

Actually, we are all born with certain vasana (unique

behavioural pattern) just like tiger's vasana is

killing, cobra's vasana is striking. Hence, instead

of expecting others to act according to our vasana, we

should realise that all others have their own

behavioural pattern unique to himself. We should thus

stop expecting this way and have a sakshi bhava

(objectivity) all enimity vanishes. We can only

accumulate this when we are rid of Raga (likes) and

Dwesha (Dislikes) as they are key

tormentors/impediments to ones spiritual growth.

I think I understand what you are saying. Let me take a 'western'

translation, since I still get confused with some of the

sanskrit/middle-eastern words and their meanings.

In my mind, everyone behaves/reacts differently to situations. A lot

of peoples frustrations occur when they can't get others to

think/behave/react the way they think is most appropriate (I was a

big offender of this the past few years at work). However, since

starting KY, I now realize that everyone has certain behaviour

patterns that are themselves. ANd no one else can change them. It

needs to come from within themselves. So instead of getting

frustrated over things that you cannot control, accept that they are

who they are and focus on things that you can control -- which is

your own thinking/behavior.

And what I found interesting the past year, is that as I began to

watch my thoughts and actions instead of reacting without thinking, I

was able to see things differently. People's behaviour no longer

upsets me. And some of their actions I actually find amusing at times.

Is this what you were describing when you were speaking of vasanas?

If so, then I completely agree with what you are saying.
