Yogis Gone Bad!!!!

Sat Nam Everyone..

I just finished reading the Business 2.0 article on Hatha Yoga.

Since Hatha's is the most well known, they must have decided to zero

in on that. After Christa's post I thought it was an slam job on

yoga in general. The article sounds well reasearched, assuming its

accurate.

Paul Keegan, the author, very cleverly built the article around

yama of the 8 limbs form Yoga Sutras. Within yama he selects either

the new owner of Yoga Journal or Rodney Yee or Jivamukti studio

owners David Life and Sharon Gannon, or Bikram. Then he proceeds to

show how for instance under yama #3, Asteya (stealing), Jivamukti's

certified teachers left them and proceed to teach the same yoga down

the street, basically stealing the yoga and potential students.

Keegan seems to enjoy reporting that the students say they left

because the typical yoga studio pays $20-25 per class for 10

students plus $2.50 for any additional.

His goal here I think was to show how yoga has been integrated

into a capitalist society over the last 30-40 years. And most

teachers already know its a fine line to walk, 'marketing',

or 'selling' yoga. Of course the 'superstars' Keegan showcases are

exceptions. Yes, Choduroy (?) sounds really bad when asked 'what

are some other good Hatha yogas to try -- Iyengar, ashtanga,..'he

says "Nobody does Hatha yoga in America but me". He says Bikram

brags about his mansion in Beverly Hills (his class is in the same

neighborhood), and his servants and 30 classic cars.

He goes on to reveal that Yee has been sued by ex-students, and

allegedly has had sexual relations with students. He also mentions

briefly that Amrit Desai resigned over sex with students, and late

Swami Rama lost a suit over sexual assault ($1.9 mill)

What is all of this saying? That maya and temptation will always be

with us, no matter who you are.

What Keegan didn't bother to write about are the thousand of people

who have cut their stress level to near zero-and probably increased

the life span, students that have made major progress in KY and

other yoga in fighting depression.

This article had to be written sooner or later, there's just so many

that have been doing so well financially with yoga, under the radar.

We should mass email the guy and see if he's interested in writing

any articles about teachers that, don't make that much, but continue

to live and breath yoga and help people day in and day out. Does

anyone come to mind??? :-)

Blessings

Brad

Good griefs. What a joke. The dead branches will fall from the trees and the

tree will continue to grow. Now that yoga is getting established the layers

will be discovered and the good, bad, and the ugly shall be.The structure of

the yogic consciousness from Karam pad, the beginning of the search to shatki

pad, the ego and the spiritual test will become evident in our yogic

community from high school yogis to college yogis...Big deal some yogi is

finally making some money. What a concept. If it is done righteously more power

to you.We help people everyday in this profession and God gives you rewards.

This guy's article should be addressed. We should at least have the

responsibility to hang our own people!...yogis and not those... who have no

real knowledge of our systems! ( joke) We will find the weak, the lost and

the disillusioned brothers and sisters of our yogic community and help them

get back on the path to enlightenment. It's is our duty and our honor as

students and teachers.

Give us this author address so we can send him some mail! Yogis United. Power

to the people!

God bless

sir khalsa

Sat Nam Brad,

feel free to include me on the list. I also teach KY to a small class and

spend right now much more money on my passion, than I am earning with KY.

Actually teaching is just another way of learning for me. As Yogi Bhajan

said: If you want to learn and master a subject, teach it.

Interesting enough just yesterday I got informed, that a Bikram - Yoga

class will be held in the future in the same room I am used to use. The

rates are more than three times higher then mine and the lady makes very

aggressive marketing. OK, the difference is, she has to make a living out of

it, for me it's just a 'hobby' in the evenings. Will see, how the community

reacts over here. I strongly believe, that the truth will preveil and that

the students will go to the teacher which is meant for them. Some people

simply like to make asana's and call it yoga without being bothered with all

the remaining stuff around breath, prana, chakra, mind, inner journey,

consciousness, etc. Perhaps this is true for the majority in our 'civilized'

world and this would explain the 'success' of various branches of the

yoga-tree.

Blessing to all truth-seekers,

Juergen
