archer pose

Does anyone know what the archer pose works on? I know certain asanas

focus on specific aspects of a person (physical point, emotional,

etc) I've only done archer a couple of times, but I don't really know

what it's focus is.

This may sound like an odd request, and I normally wouldn't ask, but

rather do a kriya with archer in it. I'm curious because of a dream I

had last night. In the dream, I was doing yoga in a type of dance

studio (with mirrors on the walls). In the dream, I had finished

other asanas, and was doing archer when I looked into the mirror to

see if my arms/legs were correct. In the mirror, my back leg looked

like it was kneeling on the ground and the front leg looked too far

forward. When I glanced down at my legs, they were in the correct

position. I looked back at the mirror again, and noticed that my

extended hand was straight out, but down and not parallel to the

ground. I raised my arm until it looked level in the mirror, but when

I looked at my 'real' arm, it was now too high. The rest of my body

didn't appear distorted. So I'm guessing that whatever archer pose is

supposed to work on is something I need or am weak in. But I don't

know what that is. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Fearlessness and nervous system, huh. I wouldn't have considered

myself weak in those areas. But I also am finding myself dealing with

other issues that I wouldn't have considered a problem for me either.

It's amazing how much you really don't know about yourself until you

actually begin doing something to truly look at who you are.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I began doing archer pose this

morning. I'll let you know how things progress with that.

Is this archer pose, the so-called warrior

pose/virabhadrasana pose? If so, I have the benefits

for the warrior pose and its variations listed on my

website at

Sat Nam mh- (what is your name?)

I can tell you how I do it. But there are many teachers of ky on this

list (and I'm not one of them), so if any of them corrects what I'm

describing below, by all means, listen to them and not to me. The way

I do it is:

Spread legs just beyond shoulder width apart. Turn left foot so that

toes point out to the left of your body. Then turn your torso towards

the left as well. Bend left knee so that it's over the left foot. You

should now be in a mild lunge position facing left. With arms, extend

the left arm parallel to the ground and straight out in the direction

you are facing, hand in fist. The right arm should also be parallel

to the ground and bent with the forearm and bicep 'beside' each other

and the hand (again in fist) right at your shoulder/under arm area.

Imagine an archer holding a bow (outright hand) and drawing the

string back ready to release it (bent arm) and this is the position

I'm trying to describe. Eyes should be open and fixed over the

outright arm. Hold for 1 minute. Then switch sides and hold for 1

minute.

Hope this helps.

That's wonderful news Mil. I'm glad to hear it helped. I don't

remember seeing you before, so if you are new, welcome to the list.

There are so many other wonderful kriyas to try as well, in case you

are just starting out. The kundaliniyoga.org website has some on-line

classes and intro to ky. Any other questions on anything, just feel

free to post.
