Guest guest
In scientific terms, the spine is divided into 5 regions. The coccycal region/tail bone ( in yogic terms, 1st chakra/2nd chakra region. Good health in this region means good functioning of the excretory and reproductive systems. Just above the coccycal region is the sacral region ( 2nd chakra/3rd chakra ). Good health in this region means good functioning of the excretory, and reproductive systems, and better functioning of the digestive and respiratory systems ( as part of the digestive system is located in this region, and also the pelvic diaphragm which is involved in breathing ). Just above the sacral region is the lumbar region (lower back or 3rd chakra/4th chakra). Good health in this region means good functioning of the digestive, excretory, reproductive systems and better functioning of the respiratory system ( as the lung diaphragm is located in this region ). Just above the lumbar region is the thoracic part of the spine ( upper back or 4th chakra/5th chakra ). Good health in this region means good functioning of the respiratory system and the thyroids. Just above the thoracic part, is the cervical part of the spine ( neck portion or 5th chakra/6th chakra ). The top part of the spine which connects to the brain stem. There is a spinal cord which runs all the way through the entire length of the spinal column. This is the one which carries the nerve impulses all the way up the spine from the tail bone to the brain stem for the brain to process these nerve signals, and also the nerve impulses from the brain to the different regions of the body to control different body function. If this flow of nerve impulses is obstructed in some way in some region of the spine ( closing or blocking of the chakras/energy centers ), the brain is not able to process information adequately as it is not able to receive and transmit all the nerve-impulse data. Now, it is easy to see why any malfucnctioning in any part of the spine can lead to a lot of related problems. It is also easy to see now why having a strong and flexible spine is highly important for having very good health. The exercises designed to improve the spinal strength and flexibility ( cobra, paschimotanasana etc ) are exercises which lead to overall improvement in body and mind functioning, as this leads to clearing up the blockages or opening up the chakras in the spine, so that the nerve impulses travelling up and down the spine are processed better. Every cell in the body functions better, as every cell is better informed about its function. The potential energy for the nerve impulses primarily comes from oxygen ( good respiration ) and food, minerals etc (good digestion ). The coccycal and sacral regions of the spine carry up the energy/nerve impulses which come out of processing the digested food. If the flow in the spinal cord is blocked out in certain parts, some regions get over-energized and some under-energized. What yoga does is to clear up the blockages and to keep the energy channels and nerves free of blockages, in various ways, so that all the regions/chakras are adequately and evenly energized. How fast is this clearing up act done depends on the type of yoga (basically, what you do/your action/karma). Clearing the blockages too fast can lead to problems as there will be a sudden rush of nerve impulses up and down the spine ( Imagine clearing a blocked pipe. When it is done rapidly, it will lead to turbulence). This will be too much to handle both for the brain and for the different organs, as they are not used to processing such huge amounts of information/nerve impulses. This turbulence might take a long time to settle down. Clearing the blockages slowly will take a long time to clear , but it will gradually open up the energy channels without causing the turbulence. In the initial stages of clearing up the blockages, it is probably better to take it slooowly, harmoniously, and with more awareness. So, it would be better to tune in to one's own system, become more aware of the extent of blockages, and pick what pace of progress suits fine for one's own system ( based upon different viewpoints and others' experiences). Each one of us is very unique, and so be it. gayathri Finance - Get real-time stock quotes http://finance.
