Guest guest
Victor, Your response re your healthy life style was very inspiring. I have a friend who also eats only raw food. She says she feels wonderful. But she doesn't eat organic. I told her I would think it is very important to eat organic, especially if you are only eating fruits and veggies. [she is in Houston where it is easy to obtain organic, altho they are more expensive.] What is your opinion? and do you eat organic? Recent research has conclusive evidence that organically grown fruits and vegetables have nearly 5 times more nutrients than the ones grown conventionally. And, they certainly smell and taste better. Guest guest
I eat organic for two reasons. One it is healthier because of the certification of no chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbacides and a myriad of other poisons they use in "conventional" farming. Two it's more nutritious and really tastes better! Go organic! AMEN! Victor
Guest guest
I once worked with a manager who said he didn't like fresh apples. Apple pie, juice and sauce but not fresh. "What planet are you from ?!" I blasted. I then asked him if he had ever tried organic apples and of coarse he had not. The next day on my way to work I picked up a 3# bag of organic Fuji apples and presented them to him. Did he like them? Before the day was over he had finished of the entire bag! You see conventional apples are not tree-ripened but picked many days if not weeks prematurely, chemically ripened with a gas,and waxed with some petroleum based poison. No wonder he didn't like fresh apples! Organic fruits and veggies rule! Victor
Guest guest
Can you tell me where to find this "recent research"? I'm very interested in reading it as I am trying to improve my bird's diet...and my own! Thanks. - Neath Gayathri Narayanan <gaia3_71 wrote: Recent research has conclusive evidence that organically grown fruits and vegetables have nearly 5 times more nutrients than the ones grown conventionally. And, they certainly >smell and taste better. > Here are some links for you, although I don't know why we need research to tell us that eating food sprayed with substances that are specifically made to kill lots of other things is bad for us! http://www.newhope.com/nutritionsciencenews/NSN_backs/Sep_01/news.cfm http://www.edenfoods.com/info/09192001.html There are of course studies showing "inconclusive evidence" or that there is "no difference" between conventional or organic foods http://www.pmac.net/roadmap_nutrition.html but once again, ingesting poisonous substances.....it's just commonsense...... however, since I've already jumped in on this whole vegetarian topic. I was vegetarian for many years, and vegan for awhile too, so I have definitely heard (and used) all the arguments for why veganism is the only choice that makes sense logically, nutritionally, compassionately, etc. However, I have been struggling with lots of health issues and I have found that eating some amount of flesh foods seems neessary for my personal metabolism, at least at this point in my life right now. I think the problem is not so much what we eat, as the relationship to what we eat, and the life that what we are eating has lived. Ideally I would like to hunt all my own meat myself, ethically, and give thanks to the Creator for providing me with nourishment during the kill. (and this from someone that abhors hunting) However, since that is not currently a possibility, I make sure to buy only animal products from small family-owned farms that feed their animals organic food and let them roam free. Something has to die, everytime we eat. And in the view of a deep ecologist, just because you are killing 10 carrots instead of a tuna, there is still death on the plate - this is a basic tenet of life - that life/death are so intimately connected. So while I am certainly in support of vegetarianism and veganism, and definitely in support on animal rights, I don't think that you necessarily have to be vegan before you can consider yourself a conscious non-violent eater. And I think the intentions that are pout into cooking the food and then eating the food are just as important as to what the food is. I would also point out that it is very easy to be an unhealthy vegetarian eater (the taco bell and potato chip diet for example!) and many vegetarian fast foods (soy burgers, soups, vegan 'ice cream' etc) are heavily processed and full of refined sugars. I am currently trying to follow a completely whole foods, sugar free diet myself which has been hard, and not had the health benefits I would have liked yet - although I do have lots more energy. There is a beautiful poem by Rumi that I can't seem to find right now that says something to the effect of (and I apologize for destroying the beautiful lyricalness of this poem, but....) would that we could eat without killing and live off the sun and the air but since we cannot let every meal be an act of worship and love!
