Frankly, a tolerance of meat-eating is one of the quarrels I have

with some Buddhists, and I think the DL's refusal to support

vegetarianism is a negative quality. Originally, when I became

interested in Buddhism, I mistakenly assumed (and a lot of people

make this erroneous assumption) that he was a vegetarian, but this is

not the case. My sense is that he feels he would lose too much

support if he came down in favor of veg*anism..
