Guest guest
Hello group, I have seen several postings about Jal-neti and excess mucus problems. I was wondering if it would help with my lack of mucus problem. Lately I've had really dry stinging nostrils sometimes accompanied with post nasal drip. This has happened before and it didn't stop for almost a year. I tried Jal-neti yesterday morning, it went well, but I got a bloody nose last night after my bath. I'm not sure if I should associate this with the Jal-neti or if it would have happened anyway just because of how sensitive my nose has been lately. Anyways, I didn't do it this morning just to be safe. I'm waiting for advice before I try it again. Amanda
Guest guest
Mucus coating is a protective layer. It is present along the nasal passages, throat, esophagus and the stomach linings. It also provides lubrication. But, it should be present at an optimal level. Too much mucus formation will lead to clogging, and breathing problems. And, too less will lead to exposure of all the sensitive tissues that need to have a protective and lubricative coating (else, the food particles can have a corrosive effect on these tissues, and lead to ulcers and such ). Mucus primarily is an alkaline coating ( slightly salty ) to kill germs, and moist to lubricate. So, the mucus needs to be of the right consistency -- not too watery/not too dry/not too salty/not less salty. If the body is too dry and dehydrated, the body cannot form an even and moist mucus coating. You might want to look into your water intake, and see if your nasal dryness improves with more water intake. My guess is when you did jal-neti, it made your nasal passages more dry as it easily removed whatever little dry mucus coating you already had. gayathri HotJobs - Search new jobs daily now http://hotjobs./

I've been very thirsty. I just slowed down to 4 litres a day because I had been getting bloated the last week and half. I have also had darker urine than usual. I may be fighting an illness everyone I know has or has had. I have been feeling dehydrated, I just didn't feel like my body was using all the water I put into it. I live near Seattle and it has been incredibly dry out this fall, the dryest October on record. Last time this happened it started in the fall when I lived in Georgia, very dry out, it didn't get better until I moved back to Washington in the spring, when the rain started. It rained a little here last night and my nose does feel better. More rain in the forecast! Just to clear things up; I shouldn't do Jal-neti with a dry nose. Right? Thanks! Guest guest
4 litres is quite a lot of water, and it should help dehydration. Since you have started only lately, keep on at it. I suggest that you dont drink water, but sip it all throughout the day, to beat the bloating problems ( and, this is the best way to keep dehydrated ). It might take a while to offset the problems of past dehydration. What I still do not get is the color of the urine is darker ( despite the 4 litres )? You might want to get a urine test done, to see if everything is Ok. It is often considered normal when the urine becomes yellow only after consuming a multi-vitamin tablet or such. Otherwise, it should be colorless or pale yellow. You may want to try doing Jal-neti with plain water, and not salt-water. This can bring back the mucus coating and beat the dryness in your nasal passages. You may also want to consider a salt-water bath, to reduce the body's internal heat. You may also try adding a couple of pinches of sea-salt to every litre of water you take, for the same reason. gayathri > > I've actually been consuming massive amounts of > water lately. Guest guest
Gayathri, Thanks for the help. I don't think my urine is an unhealthy shade of yellow, just a little more color than usual. Sipping water should help because I stay pretty busy all day I just chug water when I get a chance, I'll try to make more of an effort to sip. I was wondering if adding salt to my water would help, I was worried it might contribute to the bloating, but I'll try it. Thanks again. Thanks again. Adding salt is fine, as long as you will take enough water. So, it gets flushed out in the urine. Only when salt is retained in the body, does it lead to bloating. Guest guest
Hi Amanda, Oh Oh! You gonna make me do it. I'm gonna ramble a bit. First, I think you might enjoy (?) listening to this NPR link http://www.npr.org/ramfiles/atc/20020913.atc.16.ram (I don't know if any of ya'll have listened to this). You'll need Real Player (free at www.real.com) to listen to it. There is more to sinuses than nose drops or a trip to CVS/Walgreens is prepared to deal with. As a kid I had lots of spontaneous nosebleeds. Nine years ago I started having day long sneezing spells every few months. It started as a response to a failed engagement. Two years ago it really came to a head with an ultra sensitivity to perfumes and trips down the detergent isle at the grocery (worse than anything Home Depot ever threw at me!). What began getting me back on the road to relief was seeing a homeopath where I had an hour long consultation and given a constitutional that would help "resolve" the emotional component. The consultation itself was healing because answering the questions themselves meant having talk about some pretty intimate stuff. (BTW, tears are a great moisturizer for the sinuses and they are perfect in their salinity). I am pretty okay these days. I gag in the mornings (cleans Monkey Glands and stimulates a cleansing reflex for the entire upper respiratory including the sinuses) and this really helps to maintain. Additionally, my wake up routine settles me. I have found that emotional, sensory, or mental overload in the mornings can really mess me up. The other point that might be real useful is to look at your situation from the viewpoint of Ayurveda. If Vatta (drying) and/or Pitta (burning) is out of balance, than pacifying these doshas can bring a lot of relief. The Kapha dosha is often described as Mucus and overactivity of the the other two can reduce the presence of Kapha in your overbalance. Additionally, you are complaining of bloating. This is often a Vatta problem and if your joints are creaky and painful than this is another strong indication of Vatta imbalance. You are your best doctor. Go to http://www.ayurveda.com/info/ayurintro.htm and see what makes sense for you. This is a five minute read. My prescription? Take a long warm bath with some nice oil. Lavender/Eucalyptus might work well if it doesn't stir up Pitta. This bath can go well with ice cream (if you are truly Vatta in your basic constitution).
