Does anyone know what the hand posture of the statue of the Big Buddha in Japan

is called? What about its significance with meditation?

John

P.S. I am new to the group and think this is a great community.

Are you asking about the Amida Buddha (Daibutsu) in Kamakura? (as shown

on http://www.onmarkproductions.com/html/amida.html)?

If yes, the mudra appears to be two-handed Dhyana mudra

Check out http://www.onmarkproductions.com/html/amida.html and

http://www.buddhanet.net/mudras.htm for more info on the Mudras of

Buddha

John,

This is a great question, but there are many Big Buddhas in Japan!

Traditionally, the different aspects of the Buddha will have different hand

mudras.

Here are some web pages with mudras where you can identify the one you are

talking about -- if it's not here, send me a picture off list and I'll let

you know which one it is. ranjitk
