greetings,

i am very interested in the sodarshan chakra kriya, but confused as

to the proper way to practice it. i have two sets of instructions.

one describes breathing in through the left nostril and out through

the right while holding the opposite nostril closed. the other set

describes breathing in through the right and out through the left.

is one way correct and the other incorrect? i would appreciate any

help in clearing up this confusion. thank you, karin

Sat Nam Karin,

Here's directions posted before, likewise, I've never heard of

breathing in throught the right nostril and out the left. There are a

couple of different versions, but the subtle difference is in how many

total pumps.

SODARSHAN CHAKRA KRIYA

1. Sit in easy pose, or in a chair with your feet flat on the floor

(straight spine is key)

2. Eyes either 1/10 open at the tip of your nose or closed rolled up to the

third eye (they both effect third eye)

3. With your right thumb, block off your right nostril, and inhale deeply &

slowly (the rest of your fingers on the right hand pointed up to ceiling)

4. Rythymically pump your navel and silently chant wa-he guru

pump on 'wa', on 'he' and on 'gu'- 3 pumps then release on 'ru'

5. On one breath you'll pump 48 times, or 16 wahe guru's

one way to keep track of the pumps is to start with the index finger and

flex it up and down 4 times with your navel, then the middle finger and so

on.

6. When you've reached 48 or 16 complete chants, block the left nostril with

the right index finger and exhale slowly, then go back to step 3 and repeat.

Try starting with 3-6 mins or 11 minutes and work up.

---wow, that was a really fast response! thank you both for replying

so quickly. the way you both described is the way i learned it

first. then, in another i class i was taught to inhale through the

right, not blocking the other nostril, but merely intending to inhale

through the right and out through the left. anyway, it is good to

clear this up. i was 4 days into a 40 day practice when i learned the

second method, got confused and stopped. now i feel confidant to

start back up with the 40 days. many thanks! karin

  • 1 month later...

Sat Nam Shaktival,

Dharam pretty much covered everything with his two posts of slightly

different versions of this kriya. I would just add that when I did it I

had my eyes not just closed but rolled up to the third eye, tip of the

nose is distracting for me when I meditate for a long time.

I did this on for 2.5 hours, be sure and do lots of yoga before, the

pranayam is powerful and you will accumulate alot of energy.

Blessings

Deva
