Guest guest
Hi all I've been thinking about the milking of cows. I live in a land called 'the land of milk and honey' (New Zealand) which happens to be a huge producer of milk. I'm not trying to defend the milk thing (I don't drink much milk and when I do, only organic - unhomoganized, but my 20 month old daughter does). I strongly believe in people doing what's right for them. I've just bought YB's book on eating and am really enjoying trying out the recipes. Back to the cows - Here in NZ they roam around outside in huge paddocks and when I was introduced to a dairy farm (in my mid teens-I'm a city girl) I was surprised at what I saw, the most interesting thing was that the cows actually walk themselves to the milking shed, no dogs no farmers with sticks, just a farmer opening gates for them. They even cross little farm roads etc and have a great memory on how to get to the shed. I guess I just wanted to point out that when a cow is milked, she desires to be milked every day as her udder gets uncomfortably full (it's just like humans, the more the baby drinks the more milk is produced, you can't just stop (well you can, but it is very painful) milking cows, it has to be gradual...so it's more a question of the initial milking, rather than later milking as the cow actually wants to be milked.
