Guest guest
Sat Nam, Is your name Toyb666? How would you like us to address you? After I had been practicing KY for about 9 months, I decided to do a 40 day meditation. I had just finished reading Shakti's book The Eternal Flow of Power, where she talks about Sa Ta Na Ma being very good for breaking habits and I defintely had some "habits" I wanted to break free from. I was very new to meditation at this point, but did the 31 min version of it, while practicing it I noticed no effects during the state of meditation. For the first 1 1/2-2 years that I meditated I recognized nothing during the meditative state, but, I noticed my life changing and changes going on inside of me. The biggest change I experienced after this 40 day practice was a change in food choices and a relaxing of addictive behavior around food. I went from a very high carb diet, virtually no vegetables, to very low carb, mostly vegetables, barely any meat. Within 2 months of that I had transitioned into a vegetarian diet. Most profound were the thoughts that surfaced for me around becoming vegetarian. For the year prior I had a nudging going on inside of me to change my diet but there was strong resistance inside of me as well to doing that. I had a fear that my entire family structure would fall apart if I ate vegetarian while everyone else didn't. Once I became conscious of the fearful thought/belief driving this resistance I was able to look at it in the light of day and decide that it was a thought driving my choices based on fear. Then I was able take action from my higher self. After that 40 days, I avoided this mantra like the plague!! About a 1 1/2years into my KY practice I became aware of how severe my self worth issues were and chanting this mantra at that time was like a rotoruter moving through me!!! It was always a very painful experience to chant this mantra after that. Then again, the nudging began to chant this mantra again! So this summer I began it once again. At first I chanted it along with a Cd, this took some of the intimacy out of it for me (watered it down a bit) Then I remembered a way my teacher had taught us in a class to chant it. Inhale, allow thoughts, feelings etc to rise then mentally chant the mantra as you exhale, with the fingers tapping and pull the navel powerfully in on each syllable to cut through the thoughts etc. This was a God send for me to work through all that crap that surfaced with this mantra. This lasted for probably 40-60 days then everything began to calm down. My teacher also told me Sa Ta Na Ma should be part of our daily practice because it touches the soul. I had asked him, how long he thought I should continue with it and he said forever! So I continue and my experience with it changes. Now I feel a deep connection to my soul when I chant it out loud as if every cell in my body begins to vibrate with the Truth. My experience with any meditation is that sometimes you experience the light, grace or connection, whatever you want to call it and other times you get to experience what limits you from experiencing the light. May you experience both, Sat Nam, Sat Sangeet

Guest guest
WoWee ~~ I was JUST about to start *my* Sa Ta Na Ma 40-day meditation today, and I'm so fortunate to have seen this post. You know, I *never* come and look at these individual posts...I always wait to get the daily e-mail summary. But I did today, and now I know why. (I'll never cease to be amazed--and tickled--at how the universe can conspire WITH me when I'm on the right path!) Which brings up something I've been unclear on. That is, HOW TO COUNT!!! ) When counting out the minutes of our meditations (or setting a timer), do we actually go one minute beyond the prescribed time.....so as to finish out that final minute? For example, if I'm doing an 11-minute meditation, and let's assume I'm starting at precisely the top of the hour, would I stop meditating when the minute hand reached 12 (or would I set my handy-dandy yoga timer to 12 minutes, actually)? I *know* I can't be the only one wondering this, guys! Sat Nam Blessings to each of you in this new year Onward! Michelle

Guest guest
Sat Nam, Everyone Me too! This has been a quiet time for me with respect to following and joining in list discussions, partly because teacher training has kept me so occupied (I'm taking the course on weekends while continuing my usual work and home activities). My practice became focused around the kriya and meditation given by our class teacher, which is fine. But I also felt a need to do additional personal practice. In the last class session the teacher led us in Kirtan Kriya, and this reminded me how much I connect with this meditation. On New Year's Eve morning I did Kirtan Kriya at the end of a.m. sadhana, then wanted to keep up for a 40-day meditation. Then I saw all your messages about this. Must be something in the air ... kundalini yoga synchronicity! Gururattan, I liked your suggestion to count 40 days from today's new moon (I guess that makes NYr Eve and NYr Day 00 and 0). Michelle, regarding timing, I've been doing Kirtan Kriya for 31 mins using a dual timer. I set the first timer for 5 min and the second timer for 11 min, then meditate in this pattern: out loud - 5, whisper - 5, silent - 11, whisper - 5, out loud - 5. If I were doing 11 mins, I'd do 2-2-3-2-2. It's distracting, tho, to have to fumble with timer controls each time I change voices in the meditation. I'm thinking of recording a tape with a bell ring at the intervals and using that instead. I love to learn about everyone's experiences with this meditation and other facets of practice. It's inspiring and motivating. Chris B
Guest guest
Dearest Gururattan, Thanks so much, actually last night by the time I did my meditation I was so tired I think I timed it wrong anyway.... yikes! So, today, the New Moon, will be Day One AGAIN! Woo-hoo! A great day for new beginnings -- I just taught my first Kundalini Yoga at my studio, where I already teach Hatha and Meditation classes. It was a wonderful class, 2 other KY teachers came to support me and I had nine students total. The class is a luxurious hour & a half, so we got to do two kriyas with plenty of time for Savasan, too! So exciting! Ong So Hung Happy, Healthy, Holy New Year!!! Guest guest
Yes!! Thanks for bringing this up -- it's such a PAIN to time this meditation. What if I did 5 & 5 -- then 10 (instead of 11 silent) -- 5 & 5 ??? I have a timer that will repeat counts so I would not have to open my eyes or mess with the time then entire meditation. What would be the effects of losing that 1 minute? Won't I still get the benefit of the meditation? Guest guest
Sat Nam Ranjit! I'm glad to hear you enjoying teaching ky so much. I'm sure your students benefit from your bubbly personality. I know that I benefit when reading your posts here on the list! I have a quick question. I'm not familiar with the term Savasan. What is that? Sorry I've been quiet for awhile. Been doing some traveling for work and then with the holidays, I'm not sure where the month flew! But I've had some absolutely wonderful experiences during yoga and meditation this month that I would love to share with you all when I get a chance to write them down (hopefully in the next day or two). Guest guest
How did you know I was bubbly? Savasan/a is "corpse pose" which is the position we lay in (on our backs, limbs spread out a bit w/ palms facing up) for deep relaxation. In classes, I tend to use the Sanskrit names for postures because of my Hatha training. I know it's not done too much in Kundalini, but my trainers at Master's Touch said it was great that I knew the names, and fine for me to share this info... I usually say the pose in English, then say the Sanskrit (or Hindi) for those who care! Sat Nam! Guest guest
Dear Ranjit, > What if I did 5 & 5 -- then 10 (instead of 11 silent) -- 5 & 5 ??? The meditation is 5, 5, 10, 5, 5, with one minute silent at the end to absord the effects in the body. Who told you it was 11 in the middle? I never heard of that. So no worries now. Guest guest
Perfect! Guh, I have read so many different descriptions of this meditation it's getting confusing. Thanks for clarifying. Also Mukhya Kaur told me something like for the minute at the end, hold the breath and reach the arms up with the fingers spread out or something like that.... Mukhya -- Can you post those directions? Thanks! Guest guest
Sat Nam! My friend Lady Krishna just looked it up in Sadhana Guidelines for me and it is listed in there as 11 minutes silent!? This is what you do at the end of all meditations. That is when you are really done. The one minute or more after the 30 minutes of Kirtan Kryia is to be silent and vibrate the mantra in your mind and body. When you feel complete then reach the arms up and shake. This integrates the aura. I will get Mukhya give the details. Sat Nam, Gururattan Kaur
Guest guest
Dear Ranjit, You are right. I just looked at Sadhana Guidelines and there it is "about 11 minutes." I was always taught 10 minutes. Well I guess there are two versions and I bet it doesn't matter. Just do it and enjoy.
