Sat Nam!

Gurattan, in your response to the questions about Camel Pose, you mention doing

other postures for strengthening that area and wonder if you would name a few.

Thanks much,

Amar Kaur

Yogic neck strenghteners:

-Gas relieving pose will strenghten the neck

-stretch pose

-pulling neck lock will strenghten the stabilizers of the neck (gently)

-any posture where your face is towards the ceiling and your head is off the

ground will strenghten the front of the neck. ex)plank pose and you would work

into it by starting with the chin on the chest (head flexed forward) and slowly

extend the neck (tilting head back) until you feel the neck muscle engage

(contracting) and hold at this point slowly building up over time" to head in

line with the spine "(most difficult) then going into full extension (should

begin to get easier as you pass the midline).

Non-yogic exercises:

and instead of lifting the head with leg lifts, you could keep the legs relaxed

and lift the head just a little off the ground to engage all neck muscles,

relaxing back down when the neck fatigues

or isometrics... with the head upright, place your hand on the side of the head

and press into it without moving it for 10-15 secs and relax, repeat. do all

directions

and when the joints of the neck feel "crunched" it's because the the little

muscles around them are tight and compressing the joint, so you also need to

stretch the neck muscles to relax that compression and then strenghten.

Some of the above are exercises are ones we used to give out to clients when I

worked as a therapist in a chiropractic clinic.

Hope that helps,

There is a pose called Brahma pose for strengthening

the neck. The descriptions are at

voth.chem.utah.edu/~gayathri/yoga_poses.html

For people with neck problems, I would not suggest

the above pose, i.e, sitting and rotating-the-neck

kind.

The weight of the head is about 8-12Kgs, and it will

only strain the neck further. The best thing is

to lie down in savasana and work on strengthening

every mucscle in the body. THere is no weight on any

part in savasana, blood flows easily and evenly to

all parts of the body in a horizontal position as

the heart need not pump the blood up/down. So, the

heart has a good rest too (That is why we need to

lie down everyday, and go to sleep, to recuperate and

rejuvanate).

Coming back to the neck, to carry the head's weight,

the neck needs to strong and centered below the crown

of the head. To carry the weight of

the head and neck, the shoulders need to be strong

and centered below the neck and head.

For the above to be supported well, the chest

needs to be strong and centered below the neck, head,

and shoulders. ANd, so the waist needs to be strong

and centered below the things above it. Similarly

the hips, and the perineum, and then the legs.

This happens when the body is erect from head to toe.

And, this will happen when all the muscles are evenly

strengthened. So, work on improving the overall

strength on the body, and not just on the neck if

you have a problem there ( or, any other part of the

body, for that matter ).
