Folks,

Being new to (hatha) yoga I took YogaJournal.com's test to determine

what type--Kickbutt Workout, God-Is-in-the-Details Approach,

Therapeutic Regime or Nirvana Express--was best suited to me. It

turned out that I lean towards the last (Nirvana Express).

>From the styles the site recommended I am most interested in

Kundalini Yoga, as taught by Yogi Bhajan. I have also considered

Jois's Ashtanga-vinyasa and Iyengar.

I know yoga's purpose goes beyond the physical. That is what

attracted me to it in the first place--that it is a path to knowing

the SELF. But I would not complain if yoga also helps me in achieving

my ideal physique.

My question is: Can Kundalini Yoga help me do that--develop my body?

(I am very lean for my age and height--25, 5'8", 100 lbs.) Kundalini

Yoga seems "soft" as not to be able to help me in the physical

department. That's is why I am looking to the more vigorous styles.

Any help/answers in this regard will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Dear brewing person

Regarding the test. I am very curious about this. If I were you, I'd do some

Kundalini and do it for a while. Reap some benefits (breath and

mind focus, awareness) because it will make whatever other practice you choose

that much more integrated and whole. Otherwise why do yoga? You can

always do weight work or other forms of resistance training to give further

definition and form to your body.

I must say that there are many sets that test your strength and build

muscles.

Check out Kriya for Killer Potency (Sex and Spirituality) or Sarabandanda Kriya

(in Transitions?)which was said to give warriors such a strength

that they could throw their spears with sufficient force to pierce the shields

of the enemy. There are all kinds of navel sets.

The more I study Kundalini, the more I see that there is no one way to

describe Kundalini Yoga. Sometimes aerobic, sometimes it's pure nerve

strength, other times it's pressurizing to move the lymphatics, sometimes there

is a lot stretching. We even do Surya Namaskars (Sun Salutations)

of which Sarabandanda Kriya is part of. You can knock yourself out with these.

Just remember that when you tune in, we let go of any of our conscious

requirements that we gain in any specific way. Yogic mind is neutral mind.

The body is the temple. The mind is the priest humbly praying.

Benefits come by letting go.

As far as puttin' on some size, eat lots of mango and milk. Also, get a job

where you use your body. Lumberjack, carpenter, painter, etc.

At any rate get deep into diaphragmatic breathing.

Sat nam.

For the person who wants to bulk up, I can empathize. I'm the same height as

you (5'8") and weighed 96-110 pounds through my teens and early 20s. For me,

as I got older, my metabolism slowed down, and I eventually filled in some.

If I were in your shoes, I would try weight training along with the yoga.

You've already received some great advice concerning this. I would like to

add though, find the reason for being underweight (if you don't already

know), and do a yoga set that will help balance that deficiency. If it's a

thyroid problem, maybe you can work on sets that help regulate the thyroid.

Write back to us, and maybe we can help you chose what's right for you. Good

luck.
