Guest guest
I am about to buy an eighteen inch gong for $200.00 to use in my KY class. The person I am buying it from paid $250.00 for it new. Would a gong this size be effective for my class? Also, am I paying too much? Please advise. Guest guest
Gordon, I agree with you. I think $150.00 sounds more reasonable. The seller lives in Seattle, and there are lots of places to buy new gongs for almost as much as she wants to sell hers. Guest guest
Dharam, Thank you for the website! I will check it out. I need a smaller gong to transport from class to class. I know the seller used this one in her ensemble for the sound of thunder. Sat Nam, Nirmal Kaur
Guest guest
Dear Nirmal Kaur Wearing my business hat, I would have to say yes, you are paying too much. Very few items can command a used price almost as much as their new price. Without knowing the market for used gongs, or the age of the gong in question, I would have to suggest that $150 sounds fairer to me. If they are keen to sell then I'm sure you will get a deal. There can't be too many potential buyers out there in your area. Sat Nam! Gordon - PamENixon I am about to buy an eighteen inch gong for $200.00 to use in my KY class. Guest guest
Sat Nam Karta Purkh Singh, Thank you for your advice. I will check out the Paiste website. Is there any significance in striking the center of the gong verses around its edges? By the way, do you live in the Seattle area, too? Guest guest
Hi Nirmal, What kind of Gong is it? Paiste? Years ago it was suggested that I get at least a 26 inch Symphonic Gong. The lower tones really get in deep. I spent over $900 for a Paiste 28", a stand, mallet and carrying case. It was my big treat to myself back in '99. See how the 18" feels when you play it. One thing for sure is that you wont have to clear the whole back seat of your car just to bring it to class. And $200 is probably a good price. http://www.paiste.com/ is the site and I got a my deal through a dealer friend. I can give you his email if you have more questions. Guest guest
Sat Nam Nirmal K. I have never used an 18 inch gong. I presently own a 36 in Paiste Symphonic Gong and it rocks. It is my impression that the smaller sizes tend to shriek a bit and sound kind of tinny. I checked out a number of gongs when I bought this one for $750 at a percussion store. It really fills the room and vibrates folks very nicely. One test you might try is to see how close you have to hold the open palm of your hand to the gong's surface to actually "feel" the vibration of the sound waves. It may be in your best interest to save money a bit longer and go for a better (larger) gong. Just my humble opinion. Guest guest
No, I'm in Kansas City. As far as playing the gong that's all or mostly all intuitive. If you've ever heard the SSS play I guess you know he's tuned in to needs and finds the right tempo and rhythm for the right amount of time and in that way serves his students. I try to build to a place that will elevate the students and hold them there for a "beneficial" period and then slowly bring them back to their bodies. I try not to watch the clock or find a sound but just get a sound out of the gong that feels meditative. I find myself using the whole gong but the center is best most of the time. Make any sense? Guest guest
Well I know something about Gongs My Beloved teacher Yogi Bhajan said that for meditation purposes to get between a 28" and a 34" Paiste Symphonic Gong. I use a 32" one now in a 36" stand so it is solid. Sat Jiwan Singh Khalsa

Guest guest
Sat Nam Nirmal, You can get an idea of how much really nice gongs cost at http://www.paiste.com Paiste is a top of the line name, you may want to check out the brand of the one you are considering as well. Try out a few different ones to find the sound you like!
