bad knees

Does anyone have advice to improve joint health? Last Friday I was delivering

flowers for Valentine's day. It was an extremely stressful day trying to get

here, there, and everywhere on time. So after I would drop off the flower

arrangement, I would literally run back to the vehicle. Towards the end of the

day, my knees were killing me. I didn't know which side to limp on as they both

hurt. They still bother me. I'm only 32, I figure I shouldn't have this problem.

I didn't do any extreme sports when I was younger. So, I don't know why the

cartilage would be withering away. In ayurvedic terms, I am a vata and it's

apparent to me that's it's aggravated. I've bought 2 books on ayurveda, and I

haven't finished reading them, but skimming through, I haven't found precisely

what I should and shouldn't be eating. If someone could recommend a good, clear

book concerning this, I would appreciate it. Also, is there any yoga I could do

that would help? If I did a set that included frog pose, would I be making my

condition worse? Thanks for any help.

Shiv Antar

For bad knees, poses involving the one-legged stands

such as the tree pose help in strengthening the

knees. Also, working on reducing the overall

body weight takes off the excess weight placed

on the knees. There was a good amount of discussion

on arthritis in August. Check out the archives.

Also, you may look up for a write up on "yoga and

arthritis" at my website

and, look up for "these are good things to know"

Ah ha! You have put me up to a real challenge. Tree pose. While everyone in

class can stand perfectly in tree pose, I'm moving about as if the wind is

ripping right through me. Whoosh! I haven't practiced this posture in awhile

on my own. I'll rethink it. I just seem to have so many things I want to

work on. :(

While this can be an issue for some, it's not for me. If I lose 10, 20

pounds or more, I'll earn back the title "Olive Oyle" (spell?) once again.

No thanks. My weight is staying put, but I'm sure this advice will be

helpful to some.

Thank you for the input!:)

Ok, lie down in savasana ( this cuts off the upper

body weight on the knees ), and pull the knee caps by

tightening the thigh muscles. Hold the pull for

5 breaths and release it. This is a brilliant

exercise for strengthening the knees. Very simple,

though, but needs consistent practise to yield

results.
