Guest guest
Sat Nam Sat Sangeet and the rest of ya'll, I've been following your posts on the List re/ perspectives. I had my own experiences with that this weekend. I went dancing with some friends. It was cool to dance for the first time in 2 years!!!! We went to a disco that I've gone to off and on for years and always had a good time there. There were the requisite number of tweaks and freaks, as one would expect in any big ol gay disco. Their presence bothered me more than usual, but I figured it was me just getting old. After about an hour we took a break from the floor, grabbed a drink and sat down for a rest. As I looked around it suddenly dawned on me that there were very few genuine people there. Just about everyone was on the make or on the take, almost no one of the open faced friendly types, like me. It was interesting that I had an unintended entourage. One of the girls I was with pointed out how there were a group of guys who kept following me around but would never actually approach me. Like Moths drawn to the Light? Then yesterday I was walking past a local Tribal shop (clothing and nik-nak's) and a bunch of people were out front on the lawn. Most had instruments and they were having a big Reggae street jam. Stranger gathered, danced, shopped and made new friends. There were almost no UNgenuine people there. Nobody seemed to be up to an agenda of any sort. We all just reveled in the joy of a gorgeous day and good music. I had a MUCH better time there than the disco. I'm not sure about what part of the brain sign language acquisition uses. I do know that most deaf kids don't usually learn to read and write till their teens because the language acquisition process is different. Since I lost my hearing later in life I didn't have that problem. As Sat Sangeet said, ASL is a very image driven and subtle language which seeks to create an image, an impression or a mood. To illustrate the sublty of the language, if you're signing and the other person twitches their nose like a rabbit, it means, "yeah, yeah, go on, tell me more." I really have to let go of my linear thinking and take the plunge when I sign and go for the more gestalt-like experience in communication. You're right, that does sound alot like the Shabd! While we don't make up mantras with the facility that the Deaf have with sign language, they do both bring more of the essential me into the conversation. In fact, I started to learn Sign long before I lost hearing because I watched someone in church praying in sign and I thought it was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen. I still do alot of my praying in sign, I feel that more of me is behind the prayer that way. Just went back and reread some things and realized one thing I'd forgotten, it's damn near impossible to tell a lie in sign language. Perhaps because of the level of body language observation, but the Deaf will cry foul almost every time
Guest guest
Oh that's so neat...Leo, I love a change of perspective and an opportunity to be genuinely you! I was really laughing about "twitching the nose" meaning Yeah yeah go on! I myself, am a really "bigbody talker"! I heard a student once, telling another new student in one of my classes, that "I" teach with my eyes close....the first thing that popped into my head with that comment was..How do you know? your eyes are supposed to be closed too! BUT...If they did open there eyes, they would get quite a show!...because the whole time I'm speaking, I'm acting out what I am speaking about with my hands and arms....I find it really helps me get into the flow of what it is I'm trying to express! Ha Ha! Communication is an interesting subject...I love talking about it.
