Guest guest
Krishan, You gave me a smile today! I'm not laughing at your pain, but at the fact that I've had the same thing happen with my NETI. Let me ask you this... if you have an open cut on your arm and you wash it out with a salt solution...would there be some sensitivity? YES... but you are used to that sort of stimulation. Our epidermis has become desensitized by daily wear and tear. BUT put salt into enflamed inner tissue and the effect is amplified! You may have put too much salt in the water, but I'm willing to bet your reaction was due to your active allergies. I wouldn't worry. Just do it again... this time you may want to add some lavender, go to your health food store and ask for some, the kind you can ingest. Lavender works as an antibiotic and will help to sooth the delicate tissue as well. NOTE: If you must use tap water, I suggest you use cold water and let it warm to room temperature. Running warm water from the tap will remove rust and whatnot from water pipes. Bet your eyes watered... didn't they? (hee hee) Much love and many blessings, mary kathryn
Guest guest
Dear Yogins, I just had a painful experience with Neti. I went to a job interview, where two women were wearing very strong perfume, which I was allergic to, so decided to do a Neti, which I don't do regularly, in fact, hardly ever. I filled the pot with lukewarm water mixed from the two taps in my sink. and got a pinch of salt and mixed it in. The type of salt I used is Sea Salt, additive Free and rich in Natural Minerals. I started the process as usuall, and as it started to come through one nostril, I had an intense burning/stinging sensation in my forehead and behind my eyes. The water wasn't hot, so I don't think it was that. Should I have not used Sea Salt? Or tap water? My allergy does feel better, but I'm sure that I must have been doing something wrong to be feeling such an intense reaction during the flow of water through the nostril. Is it that when one hasn't used a Neti for a while, it stings the first few times, until you have gotten used to it again. Any advice, much appreciated, Sat Nam, Krishan Shiva Kaur

I was bent double over the sink, thinking that I'd have been better not to bother! but will persevere. :-) Krishan Shiva Kaur ~*~
Guest guest
Sat Nam Krishan Shiva Kaur I sympathize with your discomfort with the neti pot. I had trouble with it too, when I first started, even though I used purified water. (Chlorine would sting, for sure.) My husband was a big fan and we couldn't understand why it hurt me and not him... out of fear of stinging (thinking of a cut, and so on), I wasn't putting _enough_ salt in the water! Body fluids are saline, so distilled water will pull salt out of the tissues and cause problems. In 8 oz. of pure water (we have a reverse osmosis purifier) I put 1/4 tsp. of "realsalt", or sea salt would work fine too. Presto, no pain. <bg> The idea is to make the water the same temperature and salinity as the body; if your water is a little saline, you might need a bit less salt. Personally, I wouldn't use regular grocery store salt, which has funny additives (though others may have tried it and know if it matters). Hang in there - it is wonderful for cleaning out gunk after a cold (which of course we yogis do not get ) - Blessings, Sat Darshan :-)
