Guest guest
This is an un-edited forward ’03 6/12 Sat Nam, Currently in Boston, and probably around the country, PBS is showing a one-hour program that is billed under the heading, "Alan Alda in Scientific American Frontiers." The particular focus is on "Worrying Ourselves Sick." This program incorporates scientific research (including footage of several of our yoga teachers, students, and ashram members meditating at the Millis ashram, and Hari Mandir Kaur of Millis being tested for the effects of meditation on 3 basic stress responses). The program very convincingly illustrates the harmful physiological effects of stress; how we can worry ourselves sick; how stress can slow our healing process; AND that meditation can alter the response to stress – thereby improving our health / longevity. And the "stars" of the proven victory over stress and the mind happen to be wearing turbans! No intentional effort of our own could have created more positive PR for us than this piece of neutral origins. It’s so neutral that we get to see various animals, typical humans in marriages, Tibetan monks – and "Sikhs" as the "guinea pigs" in an experiment where the Sikhs / meditators come out shining, smiling, aware of and integrated into their experience. It’s a wonderful proof of the "hypothesis" that simply by "chanting the Naam, the Guru arranges all the affairs." I’m feeling that we must find a time to show this inspiring validation at Solstice, perhaps on a Tantric day during lunch. It might also be a great t hing to share in the IKYTA format. Perhaps you are already heading in this direction, and viewings have already been arranged. But just in case it's needed, I've asked Dharam Singh, one of our Solstice sound men (who has taped the program), to bring a copy to Solstice - even to offer a copy to the Siri Singh Sahib as a gift. In the meantime, if you haven't seen it already, please try to see it on PBS, and consider all the ways it can support our efforts. I think every yoga teacher and Sikh would delight in knowing this high profile piece is setting us up as authorities in exactly our areas of service. I'd love to hear what you think about this. I’m guessing that we might need permission from PBS to air it in a large venue – but our Communications Office is probably best equipped to know how to approach that. Harbhajan Kaur. Guest guest
Sat Nam Laura, Karen and everybody else, Go to http://www.pbs.org/saf/1310/video/watchonline.htm to watch the special online. Just click on the "Relax" segment to view the part on meditation. See ya'll at Solstice. Don't be a stranger. I'm pretty visible as I work with the sound crew and we work about 20 feet off the ground in that little metal box with the windows on 3 sides. Come on up for a cookie. If I'm not there I'll be sitting with Gururattan and Gordon in the Bazaar.
