Question about mantras

Hi,

I have an acquaintance that was diagnosed with a progressive form of cancer.

I've been reciting a Ganpati mantra (for the removal of obstacles to

positive energy and healing). First of all, is there a better mantra I can

use and secondly, is it effective to recite a mantra on somebody else's

behalf? See, this person is an acquaintance, not a family member. So I was

wondering if the fact that I don't have strong emotional attachments to this

person would impede the effectiveness of the mantra? I was thinking of

reciting the mantra over the person's name written parchment to aid as a

tangible focus. Does anybody have any thoughts or advice? Thanks.

Nelly
