Guest guest
Sat Nam, There is a woman in my class who has problems with raising her arms in many of the exercises. If she raises her arms much above her head, she experiences extreme dizziness. She has had this condition since she was a child, and is not able to hang out washing on the line or such like. I have suggested that she do as much as is comfortable, and visualise herself in the posture when she can't do it. She enjoys the meditations and the exercises she can do, but has decided to stop classes because she feels there is so much she can't do. Has anyone heard of such a problem before? I wondered if it might be coming from the neck, dizziness caused by raising the shoulder blades putting pressure on a nerve? Guest guest
Just a few thoughts.... Dizziness can be caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain. The blood carries the oxygen, so any time there is a lack of flow of the blood, there will be a lack of oxygen to that area. In the neck and chest area we have major blood vessels that are often compressed by tight scalenes (neck muscles) and pec muscles...they pass under both of these muscles. When we raise our arms above the head we often compensate for weak arms by tightening up the neck and shoulder girdle muscles...possibly, contributing to a lack of blood flow, as this would be compressing those vessels I mentioned.. Another possiblity is ligament damage in the neck, which creates a "wonky" vertebrae that moves out of alignment and cuts the flow of blood to the head, when the neck is extended at all...or the muscles of the neck are contracted in such a way that would create this movement of the vertebrae. Another observation I have made is that when my diagphram is really contricted and I raise my arms above my head...I can barely breathe, so this would affect my ability to oxygenate myself and if the rest of me was tight as well?? this could all contribute. But these are just some thoughts...have her see her doctor, to rule out anything dire. Guest guest
Thanks Sat Sangeet, Yes that's what I figured. Since it only happens when she raises her arms above her head, and not at other times, it's most likely linked in with something going on in the neck. I've recommended she see a chiropractor to have it checked out. Warmly, Krishan Shiva
