Guest guest
Wahe Guru! I experience this problem when sitting still for meditation...my leg (especially left) gets totally num and paralised. I change crossed leg asaan but it still happens...very annoying as it totally takes my concentration away from meditation and of course it is also rather uncomfortable...What can I do to have it to stop doing this? and what are the causes ? Thanks in advance! Phildas Surakshadevi Bhakta

Guest guest
Sat Nam.....try sitting on a soft pillow. If the entire leg goes numb...it's a compression of the nerve at the level of the sit bones...so you need to soften what you are sitting on, to lessen the compression of the nerve. If it is only the lower leg or foot.... the compression is probably coming from how your foot or leg is pressing into the ground or the other leg...so soften what is underneath your legs...try a soft blanket, matt or sheepskin under the legs/feet....and try sitting on a pillow as well....sometimes getting the hips up a little higher will lessen the pressure or angle that the ankles contact the ground at. If it is really bad...you can also sit in a chair to meditate...or on your bed with your back straight against the wall or head board...that way the surface is soft and doesn't create any compression on the nerves...which is what causes numbness and tingling and if it is really compressed, lack of feeling/ability to move it. Guest guest
Sat Naam, Sitting takes practice! It will get easier or more tolerable at least. Again, do your yoga first to prepare the body for sitting. If you have to change positions while meditating, do so slowly & mindfully, focusing intently on your meditation while making your adjustments. You can incorporate it into your practice as part of training your concentration. One position I teach as a "rest" from sukhasana is to just slowly spread the legs out straight and apart to the sides (upavista konasana) ~ this is a great seat for meditation actually because you can achieve a very straight spine. Keep that verticality & alignment of the spine when you are ready to slowly cross the legs again, in the opposite way as before, with your mind first & foremost on your meditation. Also, simply bringing the knees up toward each other still in sukhasana is a way to rest the hips. Do your best and keep practicing! "Don't just do something, sit there!" Guest guest
Sat Naam Good point about the meditation seat, Karta Purkh. Sit on the highest possible lift -- pillow, folded blanket, whatever works! -- to start, and adjust down over time as you get more practice sitting. I love my yoga bolster for meditation.
