Earth casts a shadow from the sunlight of the Sun and it's called the Umbra (darker, inside of the shadow), and the Penumbra (the outer shadow and the lighter side). The Umbra is the place of total shadow, if we were in space and stood inside the Umbra then we would see no Sun, but the Penumbra is partial shadow and if we were in the Penumbra then we would see the Sun peeking out the side of Earth, http://www.andrewfazekas.com/lunar-eclipse.htm . The alignment would Be the Sun, Earth, then the Moon for a Total Lunar Eclipse, and the Moon would be at a Full moon stage, as oppose to a Total Solar Eclipse when the alignment is Sun, Moon, Earth, and the Moon is on the New Moon stage. There are also Partial Lunar Eclipse, which is when the Full Moon passes just slightly north or south of the Umbra, and is partially between the Penumbra, Penumbral lunar Eclipses are not even noticable, and one would just think its a regular Full Moon. The moon follows an orbit that is tipped slightly 5 degrees to the Earths plane, and we see it follow the Ecliptic (which is the path the Sun travels, and where the Zodiac constellations lie). Now there is something called the Line of nodes, which is the line connecting the nodes (points where the Moons orbits crosses Earth's plane, on both sides), and when the lines are pointing towards the Sun, we get and Eclipse season. Its pretty weird to explain without a model, but picture a globe of the Earth and a little globe of the Moon, and the Sun ofcourse, the path the sun travels is the Ecliptic, now when you draw a line from the ecliptic to Earth thats the ecliptic plane, the moon is tilted 5 degrees to that plane, and almost never crosses it (thats why Solar eclipse are hard to see). But when it's on the other side of the Sun and Earth plane, we get what we will see on Nov 8th, a beautiful reddish Moon.
