Guest guest
Hi Every one, I have just been told that I have to be on Medication for high blood pressure. This comes as a painful (but probably helpful) blow to my ego since I practice yoga and I meditate every day---I thought, "How could this happen to ME" ---But I am learning a lot from this little "problem". Anyway, I was wondering about doing my Yoga---should I still practice the nabhi kryia?? It feels like some of the kundalini I do actually raises my blood pressure---I can feel my pulse pounding in my throat and I get a slight headache during my practice. Any suggestions? Guest guest
Well, it is official: the medical community must accept that breathing techniques do lower blood pressure! See research done by Dr. Benjamin Gavish with his rather expensive "Resperate" (not respirate) biofeedback gadget. The trick seems to be to practise for two months until the respiration rate is under 10 per minute and the exhale is substantially lengthened. There is then a reduction in the diastolic pressure of around 9. Many would give a fortune to achieve this by breathing (i. e. without drugs), but there is no halting the dance around the golden calf. Medication is seen as the only authentic method, despite folks' preparedness to try "alternatives" like herbs for lesser maladies. A possibly dangerous short-cut for extending the exhale and reducing the respiration rate is to concentrate on diaphragmatic breathing as hard as possible while wearing a tight "sash" of exercise band (latex band) around the waist. With time breathing becomes more intensely diaphragmatic and much slower, especially in the hours after exercising, but the technique might possibly be unsafe. If it has the effect of lowering blood pressure, then it might also backfire. If it seems to work, ask a doc.
