Guest guest
I'd like to share a recent experience and ask for feedback from the group. I work as a counselor at a short-term residential treatment facility that serves a population of mentally ill persons with or without substance abuse problems. We have many clients who are considered 'psychotic' or 'schizophrenic' to some degree. My supervisor is absolutely against the idea of my teaching yoga because he has heard that "kundalini yoga causes psychosis". This statement really touched a nerve with me because this person claims to practice "tantric yoga", etc, ... and I found myself battling against preconceptions and categories - to no avail. I've decided not to rock the boat (for career reasons), while other counselors are actively encouraged to follow counseling models that borrow loosely from meditative practices (DBT therapy, mindfulness, etc.). It's both frustrating and humiliating to be told by someone with a supposed 'spiritual' mindset that - in essence - kundalini is evil. I am told time and time again that "if only clients had the ability to control their thoughts, then they could do the exercises" - which is a complete catch -22 because the exercises ARE the method of control. It's a subtle yet inflexible resistance that gets the same wording from many different people I work with. I apologize for venting a bit, but, as you hopefully understand, it's difficult to find a forum for these kind of thoughts. -Baba Singh SiteBuilder - Free web site building tool. Try it! Guest guest
> Sat Nam, I am mystified with people's objections and admonitions with respect to KY especially because they don't know anything about it - they have only "heard" it's dangerous. When I have shared my interest, to wit: I practice, I'm reading about it, I'm considering become a teacher, I really like it, etc. what I get is oh it's dangerous, be careful, you may become totally obsessed with whatever your "karma" is, whatever chakra you are a being of. Will someone share on the fear being projected by those who don't know and don't practice it? Love & Light, Lourdes Miami, Florida
Guest guest
Sat Nam, I practice KY and having been teaching for about a year now. I too receive frequent admonitions & precautions from people about KY and they baffle me as well as these people really have no idea what there talking about. I find this practice to be so healing & edifying that it is a mystery to me all the negative comments. I'm also interested in hearing any comments on how to respond to the nay-sayers. Greetings, RED, Pembroke PInes, Fl.
Guest guest
Sat Nam My name is Carol and I am an avid reader of the list. I love all your input and the feeling of belonging which you all give me. I came to yoga as a way of making my body a better channel for spiritual healing energy and I got much more than I could possibly have hoped for. (I am now a very beautiful human on the outside as well as on the inside ƒº ) I am also a fledging Kundalini Yoga Teacher and so proud I feel 20 feet tall. Everything has been made so easy for me. All I needed at each step of the journey was the intention and to take the first step and voila. It happened! With regard to the prejudices, I would say when you meet them speak from your heart without thinking and you will always be given just the right reply ƒº I rent 2 church halls for my classes. Baptist and Unitarian. They were the only people I approached and they couldn¡¦t be kinder or more supportive. I have my space and I do my thing. The price also is so reasonable I was astounded. To the students who come I say. We will chant in Indian. Yoga comes from India. It is a science there are scientific reasons why it works. If you want aerobics go find an aerobics teacher. I also say. By coming here today you have already done 50% of the work. The other 50% is to trust me and try to keep up. Do only what you are comfortable with. If all you can do is breath then breath. Breathing is the best thing. We all have to do it to stay aliveƒº. Then I tune in and follow the teachings. How easy our Yogi Bajhan has made it for us. Just follow the kriyas exactly and voila. You know it is safe. You know it works. It has been done many, many times before. Love and miracles to you all Wheresoever you shall be my light will shine for you xxxxxxxxxxxxxxCarolxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx _______________ Find a cheaper internet access deal - choose one to suit you. http://www.msn.co.uk/internetaccess
