Guest guest Posted March 4, 2004 Report Share Posted March 4, 2004 Sat Nam, Yogi Bhajan taught this simple way to change the cycle of which side of your nose is breathing more openly that the other. Say you want to open the RIGHT nostril for a more meditative frame of consciousness as opposed to the left side which would be more heating and active. Close off the LEFT nostril with the LEFT thumb, other fingers extended. Make the RIGHT hand into a fist, thumb inside, and put the fist into the LEFT armpit. Hold it there with gentle but firm pressure so you are pressing on the seventh rib. After three or four deep breaths you should feel a more relaxed and open breath going through the RIGHT side. (Opposite way for the other side, of course, fist in the oppositre armpit.) If the side is completely blocked with congestion, you'll have to clear it out somehow. I sauggest a neti pot which is specifically made to clear out the siunus cavaties. Some warm salted water, with the other nostril closed off, you should feel the water running dowen the throat to the stomach, not the bronchial tubes! Happy Pranayam! This is exactly backwards as far as I know...I was taught (and it has also been my experience) that breathing through the LEFT nostril is cooling and meditative and the RIGHT is heating and active.
