Guest guest
Sat Nam all, Your posts and pointers on mantras have been most interesting. Just wanted to address some issues raised by Crow about their efficacy. Being introduced to mantras through Kundalini Yoga led me to seek answers. How do they work? The physical universe as we know it was created by sound. This is written in the ancient scriptures and oral histories of many religions and cultures. Everything in the universe has a frequency or vibration. Mantras have sounds that literally change the vibrations of our chakras, thus, changing the experiences we attract to us. Each letter in Sanskrit represents a sound that corresponds to one of the petals of our chakras. A most informative book on the subject is "The Power of Mantra And The Mystery of Initiation" by Pandit Rajmani Tigunait, PH.D., Himilayan Institute Press, 1996. The practice of Mantras is a separate discipline in itself with its own lineages of yoga masters (on the physical and other planes). The above-mentioned author is a part of that tradition. He explains that a mantra only has power if it is enlivened by a guru who is part of a lineage. The mantras prescribed by Yogi Bhajan and his lineage would certainly seem to qualify. Our intention and discernment would seem to be crucial if we are designing our own practice. (The author also explains why practice of unprescribed mantras can be ineffective or in the case of the Siddha mantras, dangerous.) If magic is defined as manifestation through means that are unseen on the physical level, then I am definitely a witness and believer in the magic of mantra practice. Think about invisibility in terms of frequency. To illustrate this to yourself, play with your window fan. Turn it on at a low speed. Can you see the fan blades spinning? Turn it to a high speed. Do the fan blades disappear? The high speed is analagous to a high frequency, or vibration. The blades are there, but they move so fast, they seem to disappear.
