Sat Nam,

I am relatively new to KY, however have been practicing yoga on my

own for 2years. I attend KY class with a very good instructor, and a

small class, so I am fortunate in this aspect, and the energy is good

there.

I have recently started to use the classes here, for my at home

practice and read everything about KY, it is fascinating, and I feel

great and my overall health and mental, emotional, physical well-

being have improved in a short period of time.

My question concerns an issue that has occured for a long time, doing

stretch pose, or any other pose that I am laying flat on the floor,

lifting my head increases the tension at my neck and shoulders. I

have started doing exercises to strengthen the navel center, any

other suggestions would be welcomed.

Thank you

Kathleen

Dear Kathleen,

Watch the position of your head. Do the neck lock. Slightly pull the neck

in and head back. Experiment with this. The point is to use the neck muscles

to support the head instead of creating stress by trying to hold the neck

up.

If this does not work, then keep your head on the floor. You can still get

the benefit from the navel exercises with the head on the floor. And most

of them have the head on the floor anyway. You can still use a slight neck

lock to protect the neck.

Put your hands under the buttocks to support the lower back, which should be

on the floor. If not, you are using the small of the back muscles and these

are too tiny for this task. You should be using the abdominal muscles. (and

of course not the neck muscles.)

Sat Nam,
