Guest guest
Hello, My name is Matt and I'm 19 years old. I decided to take up yoga because I have had some health problems related to allergies and some stress that I was hoping to eliminate. I started doing yoga on my carpet, alone, with no guidance other than the kundaliniyoga.org website. The first two days were very beneficial. I exercised some positions, and did minor meditation & breathing (5 minutes). I felt much better, happier, etc. The third day was different. I meditated for over an hour with my deepest concentration, and extremely deep breathing. It took me much longer to fall asleep. In the middle of that night (2:00 am), I woke up with enormous surges in my body. I tried to go back to sleep, but I couldn't. The surges kept getting stronger until I felt an enormous charge throughout my body and I felt some sort of spinning turbine in my chest (almost as if it was connected to my heart). I immediately got up and tried to relax and watch some tv (tv really helps me calm down). I was overly energized the entire next day. I decided not to do any meditation/yoga. I felt like I had an electric shock. At this point I wasn't so worried because I didn't feel THAT bad, and I figured it would go away after a full night's rest. This is where my problem kicks in. I couldn't go to sleep the next night; I would just feel the energy keep rising inside me. So I got up again and decided to watch tv (fearing that another "surge" would occur). Now after reading more, I learned about how this was a premature kundalini and how it could have bad effects, etc. I really want to figure out a way to make this energy subside. Please advise me, because I need to have a normal night's rest to recover. Should I exercise a lot, avoid exercise, eat less/more, practice yoga, watch more tv ???? Help me I'm quite frightened. If I could return to my normal self, with my newfound knowledge, I'd approach yoga in a much less intensive manner. I just need this energy to subside for now. I'm probably going to go outside and do some push-ups. I have a strange feeling that exercise might help me (maybe i'll get tired enough to go to sleep). Someone please contact me quickly because I need help. --Matt P.S. I might have sent this email to another mailing list cause I wasn't sure which one exactly I should have sent it to. Sorry. Guest guest
Dear Matt, You probably need to walk or run or do something to ground yourself so the energy can come back down and integrate in your body. Massage your feet and legs after walking or running. Or doing push ups. Don't venture too far from home in the dark. You could run gently in place. > Should I exercise a lot, Not a lot, but enough to move the energy through your body. avoid exercise, No. eat less/more, Eat only healthy food. Maybe some root foods like baked potatoe. practice yoga, Leg stretches and sitali pranayama to calm down. Inhale through the curled tongue, exhale through the nose. Slow and deep in the belly. Also to go to sleep, block the right nostril and breath through the left nostril. Long and deep from the belly. >watch more tv ???? *I don't think that is a good idea. > Help me I'm quite frightened. * Relax. Drink lots of water. Cool down. You will be fine. >If I could return to my normal self, with my newfound knowledge, I'd >approach yoga in a much less intensive manner. I just need this energy to >subside for now. * Be gentle with ourself. Be consciously aware. It will subside. Be with it and invite it to go back down your spine and heal whatever your health problems were. Invite it back into your lower body by breathing low and being aware low and in your legs and feet. > I'm probably going to go outside and do some push-ups. I have a strange feeling that exercise might help me (maybe i'll get tired enough to go to sleep) * Follow your inner guidance. If it says push ups then do push ups. Guest guest
Mr. Kaur, The feet massaging seems to help. I definitely have been drinking tons of water, but this is the 3rd night now that I haven't gotten any sleep. I'm still feeling tons of surges running through my body as I lay in bed. I really think just one full night of sleep would help me a lot. I'm scared to try the breathing exercise you recommended because I think that's what prematurely awakened my kundalini in the first place, but I'll try it anyways. I forgot to ask about music. Generally speaking, music has enormous emotional effects on me. Should I listen/avoid music? And if listen, then what kind (energizing, uplifting, calming)? Thank you very much for your help. --Matt All, I would greatly appreciate anyone elses feedback. --Matt On Mon, Aug 23, 2004 at 09:01:32PM -0700, Gururattan Kaur Khalsa wrote: > Dear Matt, > > You probably need to walk or run or do something to ground yourself so the > energy can come back down and integrate in your body. Guest guest
Hi Matt (from where?) I recall clearly what it was like to be 19 and to feel like my energy was out of control. I say "energy" because that is closer to the truth. Kundalini is only showing you in, in rather dramatic terms, what is already going on within you but you haven't yet grounded it. At your age you haven't had a lot of life experience and knowledge to temper what you're going through which actually translates into having a strong Navel Center. Also, your breath hasn't yet become your friend as you have all kinds of other juice (Libido) and thoughts sustaining you (Illusory) at your age. Doing pelvic lifts (inhaling up, exhaling down) while on your back and holding your ankles. Rest for a couple of minutes on your back and then reach forward into a front bend, grabbing your toes and let you head come close to your knees. Bend from the waist. This is real grounding. Hold for a couple of minutes. You need to do soothing things AND you need to flip you polarity. A warm tub of water with some sesame or almond oil can be real settling. You can do this several times a day. The opposite can also be just what you need. As your energy is just flying around (Prana), you need to balance and ground it (Apana). A cold shower can be a real Godsend at this time. This will bring you back down. The combination of warm baths and cold showers will help you sleep and settle in. Below are several posting that deal with cold showers. Kundaliniyoga/message/15446 Kundaliniyoga/message/15948 Kundaliniyoga/message/15648 Kundaliniyoga/message/15649 Regarding Television, when we watch it as a habit, it is because we are lonely. Consider this thought and feel yourself. At your age a chose to do a Body Centered Therapy called Bioenergetics (Reichian Therapy). It saved my life, and I don't say that lightly. The emotions, when they are blocked and you don't have a rapport with your self, can be very upsetting. One thing I found myself doing while in the middle of one rough spot was to sit with my forehead in my palms (elbows on my knees). This is something you can do as long as you need. It's your head that needs to catch up with the rest of you. Go to kundalini yogakyt13.html for more info on "coming down". I found that clapping my hands together really sharply can be very grounding, also. Also, when I need to quiet my head so I can get back to sleep, I do Bound Lotus Kriya (majorly modified). It really brings me into core being. That's where you want to be right now. Breath deeply and consciously while performing this. Cry, freak out, do whatever comes up. Be In Touch! Below is an email from the Archives. Kundaliniyoga/message/17789 The Bound Lotus kriya is a sacred and powerful kriya that literally transforms you and your whole life. It is done like this: You go into full lotus position, you cross your arms behind your back and grab the big toe of the opposite foot and then you bend forward until your forehead touches the ground and stay there for 31 minutes. You can find a very interesting article on this on the Aquarian Times magazine "Environmental Issue" by Mahan Kirn Kaur, who is the lady who healed herself from almost paralysis by doing this kriya. Also you can find more details on the archive cause there was a big discussion on this kriya around september-october (I think) on this list. Love and Light Sat Atma Sat Nam. Keep us posted. Guest guest
Dear Matt, All Dharam's suggestions are excellent. I was thinking soak feet in warm epson salts, but the bath sounds better. You have been given a gift so that you can wake up. Change your approach from resistance to acceptance and gratitude. Be with the energy as your friend, not your enemy. This is loving the feminine. YOu can also chant ong na mo guru dev no mo and call on Yogi Bhajan to assist you. Be sure to listen. Soothing music sounds best. What calms you down and makes it enjoyable to be still and be present to yourself. Thanks for sharing with us. This will help many people. Let us know what techniques work best for you. Guest guest
Dear Matt, We want to hear from you. Did you sleep last night? Did you take a warm bath? Tell us what you are doing and what is working to bring you more into body consciousness. While all this energy is moving through your body, feel it and be with it. You will need less sleep than you think if you are simply present in your body and rest. Sat Nam, Gururattan Kaur
Guest guest
Gururattan Kaur, I think I'm doing better now. For reference, I think that what caused my episode was just way too exaggerated breathing for a beginner. I've been reading all week about Kundalini and many people seem to acknowledge that forceful breathing can invoke kundalini. I guess my body, after only 3 days of yoga, wasn't in a condition to accept the energy. As for improving myself, I've been doing the following: cold showers, eating only health food, forgetting about my problems, massaging feet and thinking about the Kundalini force subsiding downwards, some light stretching, and drinking lots of water. I've been able to sleep for limited amounts of time, and whenever I do, I feel much better. If I can keep slowly recovering like this, I'll eventually resume doing yoga so that my body can be in a condition to handle this energy. Again, thanks for the support, everyone.
