kidneys/adrenals and stress

Hi Kartar,

while the adrenals sit on top of the kidney and are connected (since everything

in our

body is connected :) they perform a different function than the kidneys. The

kidneys

are a cleansing organ, the adrenals are a gland that more closely effects things

like

our thyroid and hormonal levels. Anyone experiencing a lot of stress (which is

the

majority of westerners) will be creating a great deal of adrenaline (as well as

cortisol,

etc). My understanding is that once the adrenals are worn out there's not really

anything you can do....much like the thyroid. (And I have been entertaining a

theory

for quite a while now that thyroid problems are due to wearing out the

adrenals.)

Prevention truly is the best medicine in this case (as in all :) Once you've

burned out

your thyroid or adrenal glands you can merely manage the situation not "fix" it.

One of the worst things that we do to our body is get our adrenals all excited

due to

stress and fear (fear is a major stressor) and then we don't actually release

all the

chemicals that our flight or flight response has set in motion. You need to

either run

(or exercise in some intense manner) or cry to get the stress chemicals out of

your

body. Both sweat and tears work quite well for this. Breathing can bring our

stress

levels down but it's always important to actually use up the chemicals that have

been

released. (And that will actually be easier on your kidneys since otherwise

they'll be

doing the detox for you :)

There's actually nothing essentially wrong with stress, we all need a bit to

motivate

ourselves and it can even be quite enjoyable when we use it rather than it using

us.

The problem is when we get stressed out about things that we have no ability to

effect or control. Or when we forget that we need to physically release stress

(even if

we've solved the problem with non-physical means).

We all have this tendency to want to "repair" the past or to attain or return to

some

kind of "perfect" state. It's a pretty stressful thing to attempt actually

since it's

struggling against the reality of where we are now and an acceptance of

ourselves as

we are. You cannot celebrate the "I AM" when you are busy trying to be something

else :)
