Guest guest
Hi, I'm new to kundalini yoga and to this group, so I thought I would pose a question to see how this works. It seems the further I travel along the spiritual path, and the more I feel drawn to the more subtle aspects of life, the more I want to turn my back on the world. Have I taken a wrong turn ? Do others feel this way ? Are there specific kundalini yoga practices to help integrate the desire to turn inwards, with engaging in the world more ? Thoughts anyone.. cheers Stephen
Guest guest
Hi Stephen, It seems that you like the increasing sensitivity that you are experiencing. And just as I find out myself, the outside world can be very hard and confronting if you are growing on your spiritual path. It´s ok. Once you get to know better who you really are and what you really stand for, part of your old life will be just of less interest to you. Maybe it will be good to create space for new things to grow. The world with all it´s events is not good or bad, it´s our thoughts and judgements that identify things as good or bad. Always remember that the world is the place we live in. It´s right here and now where we find our challenges, learn our lessons and share with others. I like to spend a week in retreat every now and then, to touch base with myself and grow. Returning to my real life as a householder is always confronting. I learn from this that when growth is sustainable in any situation, than it is real growth. Enjoy the ride, Rama Singh
Guest guest
Sat Nam, dear Stephen, well observed - and it makes totally sense. When people discover / experience / develop their spirituality they are normally drawn to the more subtle and silent ways of life. They start thinking, praying, meditating, enjoying silence and nature - just to be more connected with their spirituality and to feel god within. It is hard being and feeling as a spiritual person, when you are sitting in a bar, munching chips, drinking beer, watching TV and discussing the latest politics ;-) The specific KY practice you are asking for: SADHANA It feeds the 'hunger' of the soul and prepares you to live a decent, sober, healthy and mental clear life (happy, healthy, holy). Guest guest
Sat nam Adarsh and thanks for your advice Please, where can I get SADHANA? Guest guest
Sat Nam, dear Karma, You can't get Sadhana, but you can do it. Sadhana (translated as discipline) is our morning exercises, best to be done in the ambrosial hours - somewhere between 3 and 6 am ;-o Sadhana consists of physical exercises and meditation and is best to be done in a small group. For beginners it is advisable to start easy, lets say 30 min at around 6 am. Professionals (aka devote students) will opt for the full 2,5 hours starting at around 3:30. Normally we do a cold shower (Ishnaan) before, this makes you really fresh and alert for the day. Regular (daily) practice of Yoga (like Sadhana in the morning) has so many positive, strengthening and balancing effects on body / soul / mind and is in most cases the best prevention of diseases and sicknesses whatsoever. Meditation is like food for the soul, exercises are strengthening the body, immune and glandular system, proper breathing is calming the mind. If you have specific questions, don't hesitate to ask! You might also want to talk to a teacher personally - if you have the chance, visit some classes or join a workshop. Also there are many good books and DVD's around, where you can find lots of detailed information. And finally there are many websites re Kundalini Yoga. Good starting point is e.g. yogatech.com. Or do a google on the requested search terms. Or simply post a mail over here - there are many nice souls here around to answer your questions :-) Sending blessings and light from Shanghai, Adarsh S. Guest guest
Sat nam Adarsh, Thanks so much for your reply. I started going to KY classes about 8 months ago , once a week with a very good teacher (I'm in Barcelona) and I assure everybody I felt really possitive effects in my mind , soul and body..., though, these days I'm a bit lazy , not doing much , and feeling quite low in energy and spirits... I feel I need to get into a discipline (I must confess I'm not ready to do a sadhana at 6:00 am! ) because even though I KNOW and am absolutely convinced, how good KY is for me, life sometimes leads you into different paths and one does not seem to find the time to do it... I have been trying to meditate early in the morning, but keep falling asleep until the alarm wakes me up and must rush to work. I'm sure I could get into a discipline of doing a morning exercise, (spring helps..) if I had a set of exercises and meditation of around 30 mts to do every morning. I did look thorougly in internett, and searched through all the KY webs I can think about , found and printed all the lessons from kundaliniyoga.org and printed some kryas from other websites (yogatech and others)but am a bit confused, I try one krya for the spine a few days ago, and ended with a very uncomfortable pain in my back all next day.. Obvioulsy my body was not prepared , or did not do it right. I bought a book here in Barcelona, which I find a bit confusing, many nice pictures but does not teach you a structured set of exercises or kryas , warming up and cooling down. So My question is , and hope it's usefull for other people also: What do you suggest as a book or website where I can find a structured set of exercises & meditation , easy to follow, which can guide me and set me into a discipline of 30 mintutes a day , and can work different parts of my body , (and my soul..) with a proper warm up, meditation, and final relaxation. I would like to dedicate a lot more time to this , but I find it difficult , I guess it's just lack of discipline... Guest guest
SAT NAM...I'd like to recommend to you Ravi SINGH'S AM PM yoga video or CD. Two half hour sets. The morning set is very energizing. I am not a morning person and have to rush out the door for work and this particular set is perfect. His video The Highest Step can also be done in two half hour sets, but for this one you should loosen up a bit as it works heavily on the shoulders. Both tapes I purchased through Yogatech our sponsor. On your ride to work consider continuing your work on yourself by chanting the protective mantra or one you consider uplifting to begin your day. On my rushed days I always make use of the quiet moments although fleeting to reflect inward. There are many ways to continue your practice throughout the day. Keep up. .....SANTOKH KAUR Ft. Guest guest
I started with Nirvar Singh Khalsa's videos "Kundalini for Beginners", and have found them incredibly inspiring. They are available through many internet sites, although I came across them here in Australia. *Moderators Note: - visit (The world is getting smaller that's for sure.) I would highly recommend them as a beginner myself . good luck Stephen
Guest guest
Quite a good proposal - which is the protective / uplifting mantra? What other mantra's do you recommend as one rushes thru the day and steals moments of peace and quite? Love & light
Guest guest
Sat Nam, Going back to an earlier post on this topic (my apoplogies I am really far behind on my email reading!)......retreating from the world is a normal step in developing one's soul consciousness. First we are very much out in the world and much of our energy is dispersed outwards into the physical world....then we begin to find a path of some kind that gives us some technique (KY for example) for beginning to draw that energy back (withdrawl of the senses)...we begin to refine the senses and understand more the subtlety of things and at this point we begin to work alot deeper with transforming in our consciousness's what keeps us from deeply knowing ourselves (Sat Nam our true identity). So withdrawing from the world, as you know it, is required to begin the breaking down of that which is not of your true nature....then eventually as that process completes and you begin to know (deep in your fiber, kind of know) who you are.....then you re-emerge (re-born) into the world once again and begin to share your light for the benefit of all beings.
