Guest guest
i'm glad this topic came up as i've been meaning to ask for a long time about the rishi knot. is it okay to use a hair tie to keep it tight? or is it supposed to be just hair wrapped around itself and tucked in and so on? thank you, sat nam, seattle sue

Use of a hair tie is optional ... or required depending on how much or how little hair you have. If you have a lot (like my wife) then it is almost mandatory since long or thick hair tends NOT to stay in a knot because of its weight. She also covers her hair in a small cloth (Do you know what a "doily" is?) and then wraps that with an elastic hair tie (the kind without any metal fasteners that snag your hair. As for myself, my hair is a bit longer than shoulder length and has been so for 30 years. My hair is rather thin so it ties and generally stays in a rishi knot without a hair tie. Probably more than you wanted to know! Regards, Karta Purkh S

Guest guest
The idea is to twist the hair into a rope, not uncomfortably tight, and then put a single knot into it as close to the head as possible and then wind the remaining hair around the base of the knot. You are creating a slight tension that basically helps "keep your head together!" It SOUNDS perfectly clear to me, I hope it is to you!
