i'm glad this topic came up as i've been meaning to ask for a long time

about the rishi knot. is it okay to use a hair tie to keep it tight? or

is it supposed to be just hair wrapped around itself and tucked in and

so on?

thank you,

sat nam,

Dear Seattle (May I call you "Seattle"?)

Use of a hair tie is optional ... or required depending on how much or

how little hair you have. If you have a lot (like my wife) then it is

almost mandatory since long or thick hair tends NOT to stay in a knot

because of its weight. She also covers her hair in a small cloth (Do

you know what a "doily" is?) and then wraps that with an elastic hair

tie (the kind without any metal fasteners that snag your hair.

As for myself, my hair is a bit longer than shoulder length and has

been so for 30 years. My hair is rather thin so it ties and generally

stays in a rishi knot without a hair tie.

Probably more than you wanted to know!

Regards,

Karta Purkh S

hi karta purkh s khalsa,

seattle sue is a nickname; seattle is the city i live in; my name is

sue! hee!

thanks for the info. that was not "more than i wanted to know!" i still

have one question, in fact. is there any special trick to the knot

itself? i just twist my hair around and around until it forms a ball,

basically.

maybe it doesn't even matter!

The idea is to twist the hair into a rope, not uncomfortably tight,

and then put a single knot into it as close to the head as possible

and then wind the remaining hair around the base of the knot. You are

creating a slight tension that basically helps "keep your head

together!" It SOUNDS perfectly clear to me, I hope it is to you!

Blessings & Sat Nam
