Guest guest
Blessings everyone! Just wanted to introduce myself. I have been practicing Kundalini Yoga for like a month now. After practicing power yoga for a while, I started reading up on more types of yoga and I came across Kundalini and I LOVE it, I am hooked! I came to yoga years ago because I needed help with severe anxiety attacks and stress. I have been able to control these attacks, but I still feel very anxious on a daily basis (and my job doesn't help, I'm a creative in advertising) and I am wondering if there are any specific exercises or breathing techniques I can use whenever I feel like a panic attack is going to happen or when I am feeling really stressed. It's a pleasure to be here! Sat Nam! Jan
Guest guest
Dear Jan: Jurgen's answer is wonderful. I would add this: Part of the problem when we are experiencing an anxiety attack is that it appears out of our control, and because of that it seems that we have no choice but to let this happen to us. When you feel an anxiety attack coming up, notice your breathing, don't think that you are powerless in the face of it. Actually you have a choice to stay in the anxiety space or to remember what your goal is in the moment and focus on that goal. This will bring you out of the anxiety space. You may still feel the anxiety without feeling overwhelmed by it. Example: Someone is taking an exam. They start panicking as they fear that they can answer very few of the questions. One option for this person is to slow down their breathing, realize that while anxious they'll be even less able to answer any questions, and focus on what they know. In other words you can step out of the anxiety space! Anxiety is colored by the judgment of the situation rather than by the situation itself. So notice the judgment and realize it is not the truth. You may not know the truth. By you can open up to the possibility that the truth is much less scary and to what that truth would be. If you know that certain situations will bring an anxiety state, like a performance for instance, you can prepare for it by doing a Breath Walk . Is there anyone where you are who is a Breath Walk instructor? There are 16 different breath patterns for Breath Walks. One of them is particularly effective to relieve performance anxiety. There is a book you can purchase called Breath Walk by Gurucharan and Yogi Bhajan in which all the information is available. Guest guest
Hello & welcome Jan! I also suffer from anxiety & panic, as well as depression. I too have found that my yoga practice greatly alleviates my suffering. For years I have had problems with bad body image, and tend to isolate myself & be very shy. Not so now that I am moving my body in amazing ways in yoga classes, forcing myself to go out & interact with my teachers and other students in my classes & speak up (chanting!) out loud. It is quite amazing. I highly reccomend "Meditation for a Calm Heart" for anxiety, panic, anger, depression.. all that kind of thing. There is some information about it here: http://www.susankezios.com/Meditations/Calm%20Heart%20Meditation.htm It is very helpful in conquering fears, also.. holding your breath expelled OUT can be scary (so don't do it to the point that you are shaking/feeling bad!) but the more you do it, the better & stronger you will get at it. You could do this one whenever you feel a wave of anxiety/panic coming on (it takes just 3-5 minutes to do), or do it daily for 40 days. Sat Nam!
