Sat Nam,

dear Jan,

I too had a student with anxiety attacks. She was for several years on

medication and is now - together with the support of a very caring doctor

and doing regular yoga - free of medicine and fear attacks.

Here some advise, which I gave to her:

Against fear and anxiety all exercises are good, which help you being

'grounded'. Eg.: walking, treepose, frogs, sat kriya, corpse pose, etc.

According to KY, Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicin is fear / anxiety

connected with the kidneys – therefore it is important to drink enough

water all over the day.

Also important is salt (for the kidneys-functions) and the taste of salt

(starts a neuro-chemical reaction in the brain for the balancing of kidney

function). It is NOT necessary to eat excessive amounts of salt – just a

lit bit for the taste.

According to Chinese medicine, a lot of Qi (life-energy - we call it prana)

goes into the kidney-meridian in the evening at the time of sunset. The Qi

is moving every 2 hours into other main meridians. Eating cucumber slices

with little salt in this time-slot is very productive – the effect is said

to be then 10 x stronger at other times of the day.

The kidneys also stay in contact with the lungs – especially breath of fire

is beneficial.

Another thing is to hold the breath after exhale - this helps to dissolve

fear on a subconcsius level. Ever wondered why in a KY-class you got to

hold the breath so long ?!

Here is a meditation against anxiety:

Sit in easy pose, inhale, hold breath, mentally chant at least 3 times,

then exhale, inhale, repeat

'Har – Har – Wha – Hay – Guru' repeat 3x for each breath, total time 11 min

Har – project to Navel point

Har – project to Heart center

Wha – project to Throat center

Hay – project to 3rd Eye

Guru - project to Crown center

After that sit in total silence (like a perfect Yogi ;-) for 1 min

Yogi Bhajan has given this meditation as an antidote for anxiety.

To make the kidneys more 'robust' it is very advisable to do Ishnaan

(indian cold water therapy – showering with cold water in the morning).

To have best effect it is good to stick to exercises (kriya, Ishnaan, diet,

mantra) for at least 40 days.

Sending blessings and light from Shanghai,

Adarsh S.
