Guest guest
Dear Gene: There are many things that make Kundalini Yoga and Hatha yoga different from each other. Hatha (literally Sun-Moon) yoga is for the body-mind, Kundalini yoga is for the body-mind-spirit. Hatha is for removing duality, Kundalini for awareness and for connecting with the infinite in a balance way. In the practice of Kundalini Yoga there are 2 major differences I see: 1) In Kundalini Yoga we don't just do any sequence of postures (asanas), we use specific sequences that are balanced for the body, mind and spirit. To know what an imbalance could mean, imagine a scientist just using his/her mind, imagine someone just meditating, imagine someone just body building... When we don't work the body, mind, spirit in a balanced way, the imbalances accumulate and after some years you may started seeing results that remind you of one or more of the previous 3 scenarios. 2) In Kundalini Yoga we combine asanas with breath work, eye and finger postures, and inner awareness. Although flexibility is not the main focus, in the end you improve your flexibility because your energy runs better. Yoga teachings related to us by Yogi Bhajan tell us that 1 year of Kundalini Yoga is equivalent to 11 years of Hatha yoga, and another 11 years of meditation and connecting with the infinite. Yogi Bhajan had a choice when he came to America to teach Hatha Yoga or Kundalini Yoga as he was a master at both styles of yoga. With Hatha yoga he would play it safe. Some people in India were advising him to teach Hatha yoga: "People in the West don't want a higher awareness!" He was told. When he saw the spiritual craving people have in the West, displayed by their many addictions, he chose to break the seal of secrecy of Kundalini Yoga and teach it instead of Hatha Yoga. Guest guest
Sat Nam! Actually there are many types of hatha yoga. One of my old KY friends Shakta Kaur wrote a great book that compares the various types of Yoga, including KY. Book of Yoga This insightful book clearly sets out the differences between the many yoga traditions. The clarity and detail help you understand the nuances and appreciate the benefits of the various yogic paths. But this book is not just descriptive, it also offers postures from each path so you can have the experience yourself! This book is available on www.yogatech.com/go/start.cgi/store/shop.html?showprod=p18021 Sat Nam, Gururattana
