Guest guest
Dear Gurusher Kaur: There are many benefits from focusing at the tip of the nose or at the 3rd eye. Some are the same or similar like the quieting of the mind, some are different. One difference is that focusing on the tip of the nose allows for releasing unwanted or unneeded habits whereas focusing at the third eye allows to open up to something new. Guest guest
Well said, Awtar Singh. The "unwanted or unneeded habits" you speak of is the refusal to receive and interpret perceptions accurately. When practicing we are increasing the space and opportunity to receive through our senses and so it is important to keep an open mind and not allow preconceived pictures (thoughts) to cloud perceptions. Once impressions are received we can aggressively use them for thinking and drawing more substantial conclusions. This capacity is a function of a healthy Pituitary gland. In your words focusing at the third eye, "allows us to open up to something new". That "something new" is the true self. The true self is is the inner you. "The real Self knows only forward motion, forward learning and growth. Identifying with moving forward in life. Having an open mind to new learning and new opportunities. In other words, stopping and appreciating the flowers but not opening a flower shop." This is more the function of the Pineal Gland. Both glands are physically connected via the Pineal-Pituitary/Hypothalamic Axis and are stimulated by the position of the eyes and through sound. Intention, or the will to become, is an important drive for practicing Yoga as well as for improving the quality of one's life. It enables us to contact the place within you where we want to become more, we want to stretch more and live a deeper, fuller life. While chanting and practicing we hold our intention based in part on an honest assessment of one's self (pituitary) and while maintaining an openness of one's potential (pineal). A true and deep healing happens when all is integrated. Love and Gratitude, Dharam Singh Millis, MA "To be aware that we are asleep is to be on the point of waking; and to be aware that we are only partially awake is the first condition of becoming and making ourselves more fully awake." -- not sure where that came from.
