Guest guest
Hello everyone, I have ordered the song of the sacred gong. My question is...when and how do I use this c.d. I have checked the archives but really didn't get an answer. Thank You for your time with regards...Hari Nam Kaur
Guest guest
Hari Nam Kaur ji., You are free to use the gong after you have done your yoga and are in your layout. Let the sound penetrate and carry you into that big sense of Prana that connects you with all. After this I suggest you do some meditation to bring everything together. Very few sets will have actual instructions to use the Gong so it is up to you to choose when to do so. That said you must NOT use the gong with someone who has epilepsy. Additionally, play it loud enough to challenge your sense of comfort. Let it be something that you must stretch and adjust to. If your ears hurt then use earplugs, as your body will still get a lot from the experience. BTW, the Archives are full of info regarding the Gong but there are still a few questions that need to be asked. Oh, one other thing. I have at times just let the Cd play in the background while at home. The effects are soothing even then. Guest guest
Sat Nam Ji, so cool that this is being brought up because we were just talking about the gong... I am curious...in our teachers manual the instructions say to use the gong between 11-31 minutes is 31 minutes the "max" that is recommend ? Would more be too much for the nervous system to handle? Intuitively I feel that for beginners 11 min would be enough... what are your thoughts... also,I have seen a few people have adverse reactions to the gong, where one felt a black thick cloud come over them & they felt smothered & couldn't breathe...another felt frightful so strongly that she had to leave the room...another felt so uncomfortable within herself that she sat up & said she couldn't handle it & started crying...these events did not happen all at once in one sitting, they were something I witnessed at different times... in one instance I recommended that my friend buy the tape & do it on her own & see if that would help her gently face up to her fear of it because whenever the Gong would be played she would walk out & not even want to deal with it... my question is, when these sort of things happen in class do we encourage them to lay back down & try & work thru it,be with it, perhaps to breakthrough...I ask because I have never played a CD with the Gong in class, what I witnessed was when I participated & it was with the Gong being played live...(just trying to give you all the details) I would like to also add that when I have layed out with the Gong, for me personally it has always been a positive & very powerful experience. I felt so good afterwards... I want to mention this as to not deter others from trying it, everyone reacts/responds to things differently... & I ask these questions because as a teacher I want to be prepared & want to know how to respond to a situation like this with grace... in light & love Jiwan Shakti
Guest guest
the Song of the Sacred Gong is said to open the subconscious mind to meditative states in a way superior to that of any other instrument. the gong works on a molecular level, raising spiritual energy, and the mind has absolutely no defense against it. The essential is to be in a meditative state. I use it, daily, [very loud] after my set of KY [ideal for meitation]. the audio system should be powerfull to vibrate your body. sat nam Nabil M. Guest guest
Hey there Jiwan Shakti, It would be great if Gurucharan Singh would re-release his book on The Gong. I have a copy and will respond to your questions partially with quotes from that book for reasons of time. Oh, one thing that may have a bearing on the gong experience is the type and size of Gong. It has been taught that we need to use a "full chakra" gong. That is a gong that is a minimum of 28 inches in diameter. This larger sized gongs will balance the 'lower" chakras. Additionally, Paiste has many gong types (eg. Moon, Earth.....) but the default choice is to get the "Symphonic" gong. In LA, Yoga West has a 36" and Golden Bridge has a 40" or 48". They absolutely ROCK! One more thing. Play softly to begin with, building to a peak and stay close at the level of intensity, and after several minutes build to another, higher peak and then plateau there for a while, and then take it a notch up for a while. You can steadily come down from there finishing with soft, long sounds. Also, never strike a gong from a 90 degree angle. It's an assault and an insult. Strike with a circular, glancing motion. Other thoughts below, gotta run. Sat Nam, Dharam on the road............ wolfsister harmony wrote: >Sat Nam Ji, >so cool that this is being brought up because we were >just talking about the gong... >I am curious...in our teachers manual the instructions >say to use the gong between 11-31 minutes >is 31 minutes the "max" that is recommend ? > > The way you play is more important than how long you play. You must play in a way that feels rich and creamy to you! If you are in the zone, and it feels good to you then you have to know that all is right. Others will have that same experience unless they have an awful lot "on board". "The master player of the gong links himself and attunes his mind to the power of the original sound current. The proper way to link the mind and the subtle body to play the gong in kundalini yoga is to give a prayer. The prayer can be done internally or out loud. The prayer has three steps to it. You accomplish each step by reciting a mantra. Each mantra relates to a different level of your being. The three mantras in sequence are: Ad Gurey Nameh - I bow/invoke the teacher who exists at the beginning Jugad Gurey Nameh - I bow to the teacher who teaches through all times Sat Gurey Nameh - I bow to the teacher who teaches from the truth Siri Guru Devay Nameh - I bow to the unseen subtle teacher of all Ong Namo - I bow to the infinite creator of all Guru Dev Namo - I bow to the divine subtle teacher who guides my soul Ad Such -The truth that existed before beginnings Jugad Such - The truth that exists through all time and circumstances Haibhee Such -The truth that exists at this moment Nanak Hosee Bhee Such - That truth which Nanak's mind sees will ever be true The first mantra is called a Mangalacharan Mantra. This means it is a celebration of the qualities of God. It is an acknowledgment of gratitude and happiness. It invokes the mind to bow before the teacher and to accept the world as a teaching and a blessing. It relates to the daily experience of living on the earth. It is a witness to the joys and sorrows, the successes and failures, the births and deaths that make up the richness of our personal encounter of life. It celebrates that vastness and asks to be taught and guided with each sensation, challenge and moment. The first mantra gives you peace and centeredness. It is a Bhakti Mantra - a mental projection of devotion and acceptance of the gift of life and an appreciation of this moment of opportunity where you may play the gong. "The most sublime instrument of the Yogi is the Gong. It is a musical instrument, a healing tool for the nervous system and a cauldron in which you can create alchemical blends of qualities that open and develop the Inner Self. Yogi Bhajan has asked that each ashram and yoga center have a gong and play it regularly. He said it would help repair the ravages of drugs in the nervous system. The sound of the gong creates deep relaxation, releases you from the torrent of thoughts and stimulates the glandular system to a higher level of functioning. Each student of kundalini yoga is encouraged to become familiar with the basic idea, use and experience of the gong." >Intuitively I feel that for beginners 11 min would be >enough... >what are your thoughts... >also,I have seen a few people have adverse reactions >to the gong, where one felt a black thick cloud come >over them & they felt smothered & couldn't >breathe...another felt frightful so strongly that she >had to leave the room...another felt so uncomfortable >within herself that she sat up & said she couldn't >handle it & started crying...these events did not >happen all at once in one sitting, they were something >I witnessed at different times... > > "The gong impacts the body and its meridians. It releases blocks, reduces tension and stimulates circulation. The result of this is a reorganization of the emotional energy and feelings that are tied into the body structure. We hold attitudes toward our bodies and ourselves. These attitudes are recorded by habitual body postures. If the energy changes or the posture changes, there is an often an intense useful emotional flow in the body. During a gong meditation or during the relaxation afterwards some people may cry, feel weightless or laugh uncontrollably. Relax. The release of feelings is a normal process in Gong meditation. Play a meditation tape and give the person some water, a tissue and a little conversation. The gong changes the feelings that are blocked by cutting the thoughts that sustain and recreate the feelings. As a person comes back to normal, they notice a great difference between their current bodily feelings and the ones they are used to. This can be frightening, arousing, exciting or delightful. That will depend on the individual. Inform the students, before playing a long deep gong meditation, to listen to the gong by relaxing the muscles and letting the sound of the gong penetrate the body and guide the mind. If they tighten the muscles and try to fight the natural process of change that occurs, they may feel tired or irritated by the gong's strong pulsation." I will encourage people to place their hands, fingers crossed, on their navel point. Also, have them slightly roll their closed eyes downward and then to actually NOT TRY to focus. To let go of the need to go visual and to let their other senses engage and move to the fore. The eyes relate to the Sympathetic (fear, fight or flight). The sound of the gong is working to balance the parasympathetic, so the more a person can do/not to allow, the more they can have some sense of embracing the experience rather than having the mental frame that this something that is being done TO them. This same shift in focus applies throughout many of the actions during one's Kundalini practice. >in one instance I recommended that my friend buy the >tape & do it on her own & see if that would help her >gently face up to her fear of it because whenever the >Gong would be played she would walk out & not even >want to deal with it... > > Good idea if the previous approach doesn't work. Lastly, I suggest that people make to keep themselves hydrated up 'til class time, but not much that they can't get through a 2 hour class. >my question is, when these sort of things happen in >class do we encourage them to lay back down & try & >work thru it,be with it, perhaps to breakthrough...I >ask because I have never played a CD with the Gong in >class, what I witnessed was when I participated & it >was with the Gong being played live...(just trying to >give you all the details) > > > I would like to also add that when I have layed out >with the Gong, for me personally it has always been a >positive & very powerful experience. Guest guest
Absolutely! Sometimes I feel it deeply, and sometimes it's more subtle. The experience of integration is going to be different as the player of the gong can't "dis-corporate" as can the folks who are receiving the experience while on their back.
