Proof of the physiological effect of nose resistance

Sat nam all,

Western doctors object to pranayama as being unscientific, because

various effects and concepts cannot be detected with instruments.

Although the sensation of flow of air through the nose is extremely

important in pranayama, the doctor will say that nothing can be measured.

So here is a simple proof of the real physiological effect of nose

airway resistance as being essential for breathing and life.

With your head upright open your mouth as wide as possible and stick out

your tongue. Breathing will then be impeded and unnatural but still

possible, because the soft palate gets near the tongue

On tilting one's head backward (or lying on one's back) breathing is

then arrested. The soft palate is moved clear of the tongue.

However, on laying one's hand loosely against the upper lip and the

tongue to leave a small gap breathing is restored and one feels the

restricted airflow between the hand and the upper lip.

This proves that breathing with minimized air flow resistance in the

throat is not possible, and that nose resistance (not warming of the

air, filtering and humidifying as the doctors learn at medical school)

is extremely important

Sat Nam,

actually in my experience working in a pain clinic the doctors

involved didn't think pranayama - breathing techniques or breath

control - unscientific at all. Why would they? There's plenty of

literature about the effect of breath on both physiological and

psychological states. You seem to be speaking about one specific

aspect of pranayama that perhaps some doctors refute.
