Guest guest
Blessings all, I am new to KY and the Sikh tradition. Coming from the Hindu tradition and working in service to Saints/Avatars. It is new to me to hear one use the title Guru out of this context. Is this a title bestowed by another teacher after one reaches a cetain state of consciousness? Please accept my question and ignorance in good heart. Love and Peace, Stacee
Guest guest
Sat Nam dear Stacee, The word Guru means that which takes us from darkness (GU) to light (RU) or from ignorance of our real nature to realization and understanding. GUR is the formula that takes us from the one to the other. Anything that helps us along our path can be the Guru, the guiding energy. This can be a person, an animal, a situation in our lives, our own inner wisdom. In the KY tradition people sometimes request to be given their spiritual name, which is the destiny of their Soul. Yogi Bhajan did this before he passed on, (I think it is now Nirinjan Kaur which does it), by taking someone's name, and seeing their destiny through their numerology and his spiritual insight, intuition and wisdom. Some people have been given a which is includes the name Guru at the beginning, this describes that it is their destiny to be a guiding presence in the world to help people progress along their paths to realisation of their 'Sat Nam', or true nature. I have a little story to share, of how I once experienced the Oneness and blessings of the guiding energy (Guru) as it ripples through all creation. I was living in America at the time, in PA, and going through some challenges in my life, I felt very depressed and heavy so decided to go out to the local park to get into nature, breathe some fresh air, and try to shift my state of mind. I stopped for a while in the park amongst some trees. As I stood there I noticed that on the tree I was standing next to, some ants were busy in their businnes walking up and down the tree in lines, some going fast, some going slow. Some going up, some going down. I stopped to watch them for a while. As I watched, I noticed that one and in particular was struggling up the tree. It was following the same flow and direction of the other ants but not with ease, as this ant had hold of another ant, which was dead, and was dragging it up the tree with some difficulty. I thought to myself, "Now, why are you doing that?... it's dead, let it go, you are making life very difficult for yourself, where are you going with it, and what will you do with it when you get there? It's unnecessary baggage". The moment that I heard myself think these thoughts, i realised, "Oh wow, this is me!!! This is what I am doing. I am struggling right now because I too am carrying so much unnessary baggage, and worrying unnecessarily about things which aren't important". I realised I had lost my focus on what was important in my life at that moment, and of the things which help me towards happiness and lightness. And that there were some things I needed to let go of. And with this new thought and realisation, I thanked the ants and carried on my way, feeling much better with the new knowledge and perspective on my life as it was at that time. So... in this situation the ants were the Guru, the guiding wisdom which helped me to move from ignorance to understanding. The guru is everywhere. It is only us which need open our eyes to see that this guidance is offered, in all places and at all times. This is why in KY we chant... Ong Namo, GURU Dev Namo - (The Adi Mantra) We tune ourselves into experience the divine energy that is present in all creation, and to the subtle guiding wisdom (Guru), that is both within us and in all that surround us. If you hit a block. And can't see which way to go. If you feel muddled and need some clarity. Chant this mantra. As Yogi Bhajan has guided us for this time in humanity, 'There is a way through every block' and that if we 'Vibrate the Cosmos and the Cosmos will clear the way', (by chanting or doing something to change our energy). There is another mantra we chant called the Mangala Charan Mantra. This specifically helps tune us into the guiding energy. Guru, this guiding energy and wisdom has been here since the beginning of creation, throughout the ages and the True universal guiding wisdom is here now... (we only need open to it). Aad Guray Nameh - I call upon/tune into/bow to the primal guiding wisdom Jugaad Guray Nameh - I call upon/tune into/bow to the guiding wisdom that has flowed through all ages Sat Guray Nameh - I call upon/tune into/bow to the True Guiding Wisdom Siri Guru Devay Nameh - I call upon/tune into/bow to the Great Subtle Guiding Wisdom You are guided by your Soul through every moment of your life, and by your heart's deepest Truth. Sometimes, this experience of being guided comes through another person, sometimes through a situation which is happening in your life, sometimes... by an ant. ;-) All is one, so when we send the ripple out, it always comes back.. through one of the universe's many forms.
