Guest guest
L.L. Scott: I like you description of using the abdomen as a below for the breath of fire. That clearly indicates to generate the breath not from the nose as we typically breathe. Now the breath of fire is actually generated from the solar plexus moving it in and up to put pressure on the diaphragm and empty the lungs and then relax the solar plexus to let the breath in again. This is done rapidly, 2 or 3 cycles a second (although for beginners this is done much slower!) So it is the solar plexus that creates the bellow movement. In the process, the navel area and abdomen do move. Blessings, Awtar S. Rochester, NY
Guest guest
Sat naam jis Another similar pranayam to breath of fire is Kapalabhati. It focuses on the exhale: you pull in the navel to just push the air out. Then the inhale is a natural reflex reaction to the forced exhale, you passively let it happen as the belly relaxes. This is a good intro practice for breath of fire if you have trouble coordinating the navel pumping w/ 2 parts of the breath. Get used to pulling the navel in and letting it relax out automatically. Then you can transition to BOF very simply by purposefully adding the inhale to Kapalabhati and working on a breath of equal parts: equal inhale and exhale. Hope this makes sense! Happy breathing, ranjit k.
Guest guest
Sat Nam another difference with Kapalabhati breath is that its stronger more forceful than Breath of Fire, breath of fire should be done like a puppies breath, gentle & rapid. Before I went to teachers training I was taught that BOF was a strong powerful breath & when I went to New Mexico I had to learn to do the breath differently & was told that when its done strong we wear ourselves out faster, yet when its done gently we can go on for much longer...
