I have a question and don't seem to be able to access the so

I am hoping to slip it in, in response to Andrea's posting.

I am a beginner at kundalini yoga. I am on day 82 of a 90 day practice

- is this called a kriya? Anyway I am doing the Laya Kriya and the

asanas for the 10 Subtle Bodies. I am also attending a weekly kundalini

yoga class at my community Gudwara (spelling.) Since I started this

practice I would get sharp almost excruciating pain in my left ear. I

went to see my family physician who conducted a number of tests and my

blood pressure is fine. I have also had a CT Scan and complete x-rays

as well as a stress test and I am perfectly healthy in every respect.

More recently the pain would subside but approximately 30 to 60 minutes

after practice the pain would return gradually this has been accompanied

by a whooshing sound as though water was suddenly running through my

ears to my head. This is inevitably followed by a very odd shimmering

sound. This lasts for a few minutes and is followed by the sound of

holding a shell up to your ear - the sound of the seashore or the ocean.

A few weeks ago in class our teacher played a recording of what she

called a Sacred Gong. This is exactly the sound I hear but it is always

preceded by intense pain. When I first started practicing this Kriya (is

this the correct term) during the meditation portion I had an extreme

aversive response something one of you called "road rash". I have only

experienced this process in relation to the Laya Kriya and 10 subtle

bodies but last night during class after doing life nerve stretches I

had the same experience only even more intense ear pain followed by a

more intense gong sound. Then this morning when practicing I got the

same response and then the sense that I was disappearing into everything

until I opened my eyes - it was most peculiar. Other than these

"bizarre" and physically painful experiences I have to say my practice

is totally mundane - no light waves, no sense of "kundalini" energy - I

am not sure I could identify that even I was experiencing it...just the

physical sensations of the movement, the rests and then the

mediation...I suppose it has its own rhythm but no earth shattering

realizations or anything and not a lot of emotional material surfaces.

Although in some indecipherable sense the practice feels transformative

but I could not say why pther than it feels like I am more solid not in

a fixed sense but more present.

So all this background for the following questions: Does this pain

indicate I should stop the practice? Does this mean I might be better

suited to other forms of yoga? - I have practiced hatha yoga off and on

but never with the same initial dedication or response...as this 90 day

practice comes to a close should I simply ride it out, which I am

inclined to do, and then try another kriya?

Reflections, guidance would be appreciated.

Dear Brenna in Vancouver:

My sense of your experience is that you are receiving much more from the 10

body Kriya (yes it is the correct term) and the Laya meditation than you

think.

The sounds in your ear are a huge opportunity of energy opening. You say

there is pain but then what replaces pain is expansive, akin to the sound of

the gong or the sound of the ocean. And you also talk about the experience

of disappearing into everything. . . this is the result of Kundalini Rising.

You don't have to feel a rush of energy. . . the results you are

experiencing are huge!

My recommendation is to continue doing what you are doing for now, take

advantage of the gifts given to you from this practice, and whenever you

feel pain know that it is the way your body is letting go of what you don't

need anymore so embrace the pain., let it flow through you, open your heart

to it and let the experience give you the meaning of what you are going

through, don't seek meaning first. Dive into the experience, with complete

faith. Meaning will come in due time!

You are doing great and if you remove the doubts you will free yourself!

Many blessings,

Awtar S.
