Guest guest
This is in response to the question about the 1000 Names of the Divine Mother from the devotee in Scotland. The MA Center has an excellent cassette tape of a Swami singing the 1000 names as well as two books about them. The smaller book contains the words in Sanskrit and has a few pictures of Mother. I keep this copy in my purse as a travelling version which I look at when waiting in lines and what-have-you. There is also a full length book about the 1000 names with a detailed explanation of each one (not just a translation). I recommend the longer book if you are seriously interested in studying the 1000 Names. There is also a new CD-ROM which looks wonderful. (I have purchased it and I am waiting for a friend to upgrade my computer for me so I can run it.) If you are drawn to the 1000 Names I encourage you to pursue it. I find it to be incredibly powerful and centering. I go through long stretches of doing the Names daily and then long stretches when I don't. I am currently doing the 1000 Names regularly and it is the most powerful meditation I have experienced. I have a variety of different ways that I work with the Names. Let me know if you are interested. Jai Ma! Madhurima / Oceana del Fuego Seattle, WA USA
Guest guest
Hi, Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. I wouldn't say that I "know" or have "learned" the 1000 names, but I do work with them fairly regularly. All the other suggestions from people sound good. Swami Paramatmananda recommended memorizing 10 names a day, but this didn't work very well for me. What I do is take one of the 1000 names with me on a small piece of paper when I go walking and repeat it for the whole walk - about 35 minutes. This has worked very well for me and I find that the names are in my unconscious mind from this process. I often know which one is next or with one of the longer names, I know the end of it after hearing the first word or two. I have done them rougly in order. The first 100 have been the hardest and when I was working with those I would periodically choose one in the 100-200 sequence just because they are easier and I wanted a break. I put a small pencil check mark by the ones I have walked with so I don't do duplicates. I also write the translation on the piece of paper. In our local satsang we do the 1000 names once a month and this rendition is shorter then the MA Center tape - roughly about 47 minutes. I have a tape of that and use that frequently since it is a bit more manageable than the longer tape on a busy day. I hope this is helpful. Jai Ma! I'm going to experiment with this. Jai Ma! Kenna/Premarupa
