Guest guest
All: One of the links on our links web page (/links/Ammachi) references a web page (http://web.tampabay.rr.com/grn/ ) that has sound files of each line of the 108 names. The voice quality is excellent. These are files with an extension of RA (for Real Audio). I would like to create a single file with all the individual files concatenated together. With a single file, I can feed it out to a tape recorder and produce a tape. Of course I need to contact the owner of the web site to get permission so I don't run foul of copyright laws. Actually, I would like two files. One of them would have a longer pause in between the lines so I can repeat it. Does any know how or have the software to merge RA type files together? Guest guest
Om Namah Shivaya, Kalika - I can certainly understand your struggle with learning the Sanskrit pronunciation of the 108! It is not easy, particularly for westerners. However, I would suggest that you will experience a greater deal of spiritual energy from taking in and enjoying the Sanskrit sounds... others have commented some on this. Sanskrit is an energetic language - the sounds you are making are literally stimulating the chakras through the movements of the tongue around the palate and mouth. As mentioned, Sanskrit was "divined" by the ancient rishis - literally heard and seen in the "petals" of each of the first 6 chakras. It is also a great lesson in patience and discipline. Do not expect yourself to be able to do all 108 at once when you are first learning! I recommend breaking them up in smaller groups, like 10 at a time, and become comfortable and familiar with those 10 until you move on to the next set (this is how I became comfortable with the Lalitha Sahasranama). If you are able to afford the CD rom on the 108, it is very helpful and you can repeat each one more easily than with the tape. It is lovely to chant in Sanskrit - there is also an advantage to not focusing on the meaning of the words, but feeling the energies of the sounds. It helps to keep the mind quiet, I find. You can fill in the other 98 with Om Amriteswaryai Namah as others have suggested, or your mantra from Amma, whatever, until you have become comfortable with all 108 names over time. Take your time and enjoy, and I think you enjoy the fruits of the Sanskrit sounds. Guest guest
ambujam and others, thanks for the responses on the 108 names. the swami's at MA center have actually said to chant them as they are written, in sanskrit, as have other people. and when i see people chanting them they are always chanting the original text, not the translated english version. i just don't understand why. i remember another question from the san ramon retreat: a dreadlocked brother said to amma in a somewhat lyrical and to me what sounded retorical way "this is the last and final question - where does GOD came from?". amma laughed out loud as did the swami and said for him to ask himself that question - to ask him mouth where sound came from. and then just moved on. does anyone else remember that question and amma's answer? i am wondering whether it was only me that heard it as being kind of a funny question and answer - like amma wasn't taking this devotee seriously due to the way he asked the question. Guest guest
Kalika, ARe you referring to Amma's 108 names or the 108 names of Devi. I think the difficulty in chanting this will be there for sometime in the beginning, but gradually you will become very proficient in it. But it is worth the effort as the words carry great power - proper pronunciation is essential to get full benefits. I think the reason why you see people chanting the original text is coz the Sanskrit pronounciation is not adequately captured in English. But I have seen a newer English version with all the words phonetically written so this should be adequate. I do not recall this incident at the San Ramon retreat (was it this time?)- must have happened right after I exited. But I have written down most of Amma stories recounted by the Swamis, Amma jokes etc; will try to post them sometime. -yogaman ps. I recall seeing "kalika" written on top of the big chai container in the snack shop. Guest guest
Snehalata-ji, Dont remember which was this book, I do remember someone reading it at the retreat. When you visit Amma, check out the bookstore - I think most decent English shloka books sold have some sort of a pronounciation guide. Hope that helps! -Yogaman Ammachi, "Dixie Thacker" <dixielou@s...> wrote: > > - > childofdevi > Ammachi > Tuesday, June 29, 2004 11:06 PM > Re: 108 names > > > Yogaman, > > Do you know where the phonetically written version is available? Guest guest
Achintya Thanks for your words regarding sanskrit. Your words resonated with me, and I now feel like i understand a little better why the original pronunciation is desired, vs. english or another language. (I have not tried the Lalitha Sahasranama, although I sat on the stage during devi bhava and watched a brother say it faster than I could get thru Amma's 108!) and for yogaman - yes it is the 108 names for Amma that I have been practicing, I haven't tried the 108 for Devi yet. The question I was wondering about was during this past retreat...It must have been Friday, b/c Saturday's Q&A was out in the grass. I often do work in the snack tent, this year I was supervising down at the snack table in the dining hall for several of the days I was there. I don't know why Kalika was written on the chai container tho. om amriteswyre namah kalika
