When we returned from India, I was so full of devotion, and a lot of my friends were questioning me about "this guru thing" and expressing typical western doubt and misunderstanding. I ended up asking them what it was they worshipped. One admitted that it was "things". She pretty much got my point. I started looking around and realizing that the mains objects of devotion in the US are consuming and managing impressions (how things look). And, of course, chocolate (Amma surely knows what she's doiing with hershey kisses for prasad)! I love the image of worshipping a gator! I suppose up in these parts it would be a badger. And I am still pondering my own words about the objects of worship. Running though my head is the expression "what serves you best"? Perhaps that offers a criteria on what is more beneficial to worship. Hummm, maybe I could start on vegetarian gators.
