Toys for Amma's Schools

Dear Friends,

Last December-January when a friend and I (both

librarians who had been involved in sending books to

Mother's schools) were at Amma's ashram in India,

we were told that Amma has asked for the teachers

there

to make learning fun for the children. (This is not

the usual concept in Indian schools, I understand!)

We were told that educational toys were needed for the

schools.

I found myself getting very excited about the

possibility of purchasing good used toys and sending

them to India with individuals who are traveling

there.

(It's a long story, but we can't ship them by

container.) So this summer I asked Amma if she wanted

me to work on "toy seva for India." She said, "Yes!

Yes!" So finding good used toys has been occupying a

good deal of spare time for me, and I'm happy to say

there is a bumper crop!

The problem at this point is knowing who is going to

Mother's ashram who would be willing to take a

suitcase of toys. I will provide both the suitcase

and the toys, and will ship to where you are.

My hope is that bringing these gifts to the children

of our Amma's homeland will give you as much joy as it

does me. It takes so little to make a child happy,

and this rich country has so much to give!

If you want to help, please contact me at the above

address.

In Amma's service,

Jyotsna

P.S. Sorry for the duplication for those on both

lists!

Dear Ellen,

I so wish I was going to India to help take some toys. I wanted to let you

know I passed your e-mail on to a hindu homeschooling list as I know one or

two people do go to India now and then or have family there and maybe

someone can help or pass the message on.

If there is anything I can do to help please let me know. I live in

Connecticut and am not planning a trip to India but if you need toys or

books or anything let me know I will be more than happy to help and so

would my children.

In Amma's love,

Shelly

Dear Shelly,

Thank you so much for your kind and prompt reply!

We never know what may happen from the messages that

are sent out!

I wish I could go too, but it for sure won't be this

year!

I can't tell you how much joy this project gives me!

Right now my living room and family room are crammed

with toys and books, but I will keep your generous

offer in mind. You can send books to the ashram

directly by M-bags (inquire at the post office) for

about $.79 per pound. This is fairly expensive, but

the only secure way to get books into India without a

courier. If you decide you want to try that, I can

tell you the sort of books that work best and the

specifics of how the M-bags have to be addressed.

I wish we were closer so we could work together.

Alas, I am in the Seattle area! Amma likes to keep

her children spread out, I guess!

Thanks again!

In Amma's love,

Jyotsna
