Hello all,

I'm interested in travelling to Amritapuri, perhaps even in January, and was

wondering what advice people had about how to get there?

I know its possible to fly t bombay or madras and then get to Kerala but my

knowledge ends there. Does anybody have suggestions or travel experiences?

Thanks,

Manohari

My friends tell me that Kuwait Airlines has the best fares. They fly to

Trivandrum.

We flew this way last year. It is very reasonable if you can find a seat at

this point. There is a lovely devotee, an ayurvedic doctor, and (honestly) a

look-alike, sound-alike twin of Amma's, who runs a clinic at a beautiful

seaside resort area called Kovalam Beach (this is an India style resort--not

a Miami style resort--very charming. many devotees spend time there) just

outside of Trivandrum. She can arrange to pick you up at the airport and put

you up reasonably for a night or 2 to recover from jet lag or take you to

the ashram. This arrangement is especially helpful on the return because the

flight leaves early, so it's nice to spend the night at the resort and have

her driver take you to the airport in the wee hours. Otherwise you're forced

to leave the ashram in the middle of the night.

The biggest downside of the Kuwait service is that on the return you have to

spend the night confined to their airport hotel, and at this time of year it

is unheated and very cold, especially after being in Kerala. I spent most of

the time under the covers and ate meals with my coat on. I'd do it this way

again, but would be more prepared for the cold layover.

If you'd like more info on this, let me know.

Last January I took Kuwait Airlines to the Ashram. The price was about the

best that I found.

Kuwait was the only route I found across the Atlantic that flew into

Trivandrum. There maybe a couple of other airlines that offer this service. I

specifically wished to avoid Mumbai for two reasons: 1) I found most flights

arrived in the early morning (like midnight or 1 am) and the two daily

Munbai/Trivandum flights leave at 6 or 7 am. Getting to and from a hotel left

little time for sleep. 2) Mumbai is just not my favorate place on the planet.

On one flight I took to Mumbai, I was first off the plane and just about

passed out from the smell of the air when they opened the door. Luggage theft

is quite high at the airport.

There is also the added cost of $200+ for the airfare from Mumbai to

Trivandrum.

I did find the seats are spaced quite close together on Kuwait and to travel

for such a long time from New York to Trivandrum, I was very uncomfortable.

(I'm 6 feet). Next time, I will stop over in London for a couple of days!

Returning has an additional problem. The flight from Kuwait to New York

leaves about one and a half hours before the flight from Trivandrum arrives.

Thus, I had to stop over in Kuwait for a day. I was restricted to being in

the hotel during that time. The hotel was comfortable and food was OK but

there is little to do. So, if you do travel this route, bring a good book!
