Guest guest
I have a friend whom I introduced to Ammachi, who said (not entirely with tongue in cheek): "what I like about Hinduism are the marvellous opportunities it affords us for shopping..." Indeed, I enjoy browsing through the "mela" on display during Devi Bhava, and have been known to pick up a mala, a prayer shawl, or some of Amma's books. A few years ago I purchased a small bronze <murthi> of a Goddess. The devotees working at the tables said she was an "Amma," a South Indian Mother-goddess, but no one knew which one. She's seated in a half-lotus position, with her right leg pendant. Four arms: upper right holding a serpent wrapped around a damaru drum; lower right holding a short sword, vertically, point up; lower left holding a ring or a quoit (not the usual way a Sudarshana-type chakra is presented); upper left holds what looks like a noose. Three eyes are in her slightly frowning face; a tall headdress has a cobra wrapped around the brim. Behind her head are five stylized flames, and behind the flames a cobra hood with five heads. There's an ornate arch behind and above her, with a Face of Glory at the top. I've seen her picture printed in an overview of Hinduism, where it was labelled "Durga," and undoubtedly she's been merged with the warrior goddess, but must have a South Indian name of her own. Any iconographers out there? Do you recognize my little bronze Amma? -- Len/ Kalipadma <dehi saubhagyam arogam dehi me paramam sukham/ rupam dehi jayam dehi yasho dehi dvisho jahi//> (give beauty, good health, give us supreme bliss/ give good form, give victory, give fame, and remove divisiveness//) ______________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Hmm. What comes to mind for me is Chinmayi, but I am far from sure.. . --Manohari
