Guest guest
Can someone please tell me how to know the differences between tapas (burning off vasanas) and potential health problems (i.e. infections) or hormonal imbalances. I have been having flashes of intense heat in various parts of my body for a while now. How can I know if I should seek medical assistance or just go with the flow? Are there distict differences? Guest guest
Tapas often refers to ascetic practices that a person undertakes to purify the mind. The word actually means heat. Some of these practices involve heat...like standing in the sun in India waiting to see Mother. Infections often cause inflammation (heat, swelling and soreness) as the body's immune system battles the infection. Those are usually recognizable: a sore throat, a boil, sinus infection, infection around a wound. Hot flashes usually are a whole body experience! They happen to women in perimenopause and beyond. The cause is associated with changes in hormone balance. A hot flash can be a mild flush of warmth or a dramatic surge of heat and heavy perspiration. It can also happen at night and disturb sleep. What you describe may not be any of the above. It sounds like an imbalance of some kind, more the realm dealt with by complementary care. Having a massage now and then might help. There's no real way to tell, because diseases or ailments can be created by tapas. This is one way some of your Karma is burned up. Sometimes you'll have an old ailment return or a current one made worse before it's finally "done". I can't tell you how many times I've been to the doctor over the past year for various ailments in which the medicine that should've had at least some effect, didn't. Heat that's accompanied by pain, such as heat and pain from your jaw area and lymph nodes could indicate specific problems such as gingivitis. When in doubt, get checked out. Anytime you get good, prolonged concentration, you can get a hotflash, usually as a delayed reaction, while other times I've gotten a hot flash from bhajan singing. But hotflashes and even doing tapas, assumes that you have a certain amount of stored energy. There's a threshhold for tapas where you no longer benefit from the specific tapas practice and start torturing your mind or body, as warned in the Bhagavad Gita and other places. Getting hotflashes versus a serious illness that needs immediate attention also depends on your current diet and how much sadhana and tapas you do. Garlic, spicy hot, and meat make it easier for your body to heat up. As your kundalini awakens and stays awake, due to intense and prolonged sadhana, I can tell you, even as Amma says, that you'll need to change your diet, and reduce your intake. Next time a part of your body heats up, try rubbing some vibhutti ash on it. I suffered with hotflashes for about 3 years, along with hives before I recognized that the locations of the most heat and the hives mirrored the locations of the lyphatic system, and amazingly the locations on the body where Siva devotees place vibhutii tilaks/marks on the body. Rubbing some ash on my body where it got hot and got hives took care of the problem many times. Generalized hotflashes can be intense and impossible to overcome except maybe with a nap, other times I've "broken the fever" by continuing the constant japa I was doing even though it was difficult due to the heat, and suddenly the fever broke, and I could feel the cool gel-like ambrosia pouring gently over the top of my brain. Another time, back in '98, I fasted on juice for 7 days before having darshan. Back then when there weren't tokens, I was sitting in line from early in the morning, and was experiencing intense hotflashes and nausea, which intensified as I got closer for darshan. After I had darshan, after which I felt so sick I could barely stand and had to sit down on the side for a while, I went and had a nasty bowel movement which immediately cooled down my body and had immediately lifted something off of me karmically, because I felt completely different. This "bowel movement" conclusion to intense hotflashes has happened a few times since then. Didn't mean to be gross, but I hope my experiences help. About getting massages, don't get them if you think you may be sick, because even massage therapists will tell you that getting a massage when you're sick can worsen it. tom
Guest guest
Namah Shivaya: Dear Blessed Self Well and Wish u the same by the Infinite Grace of AMMA. I'll try to answer ur question...it is always better not to meditate on points ....by points i mean ...especially the point which is between the eyebrows...in Patanjali's Yogasutras it is said that if u meditate on certain points...it is certain that u gain powers without ur knowledge...for eg...if u concentrate on the point between the eyebrows u'll be in a position to read other peoples thoughts (something like ESP power)and if u concentrate on ur breathe u get very good voice, meaning a voice that could attract the attention of others...similarly there are powers that u gain when u concentrate on other points.... It is always better to meditate in ur heart, which is what AMMA recommends.u can meditate between the eyebrows when AMMA is physically present...when u meditate between the eyebrows ur body becomes heat and u also suffer from severe headache...so better dont meditate between the eyebrows...the symptoms which u've mentioned conveys to me that u meditate between the eyebrows...as such i dont think there is a need for medical treatment....jus stop meditating on points for few days ...relax urself and try to change ur meditation style (better concentrate on AMMA's form in ur heart, that will be the best)..infact concentrating on ur heart makes ur body cool and ur color of ur body changes to rose ...hope u'd have heard abt KANCHI PARAMACHARYA..if u see his body it will be rose in color ..soft and tender..it is said that HE meditates on HIS heart.AMMA too have gr8 regards to KANCHI PARAMACHARYA.Hope i've answered ur question atleast partially Abovesaid r jus my thoughts, it is better that u refer some YOGA Master for better insights. Guest guest
Namah Shivaya, That was very nice. I struggled for some time about where to focus. Initially I focussed on in between eyebrows but then started getting headaches because body was not relaxed, so I started relaxing and work on good steady breaths. Then I tried meditating on heart, and I struggled to find my heart. Then all of a sudden I started hearing my heart throbs (beating in the chest) that frightened me. So I stopped and was nervous for some time, then silent and peaceful walk helped me in the meditation. Eventually I started listening to some chants to calm and to meditate, that helped me lot. Now I pretty much wonder around my body, just like we do relaxing technique - shavasana - lying like a corpse. Relaxing and breathing, slowly let focus drift towards chest or forehead. If I make it, it's good but I enjoy regardless. I feel I have explored well enough (and I may do more as the need arises.) By the way I recently attended class on Sudarshan Kriya and they start with lots of breathing exercises followed by -corpse- like "shavasana" posture. That seems to fit in my method well also, just like other day I had mentioned Sidha Yoga style chant followed by meditation. All methods have their timing and advantages. Simple postures (breathing exercises) followed by shavasana or meditation with (or without) all work for me. Focusing on heart or third eye is not an issue either. Regardless of the method you use, more one is relaxed more one would enjoy the meditation. Just relax and have a big lung - compassionate heart helps lot! [i used to do meditation for .30 to 2 hours during my teen years, then missed for few 15+ years and finally once again I'm trying to put it back together but this time I want to go beyond. Trust me there will be Romulans, Firangies, etc... to rob the happiness.] Thanks Amma and all the wonderful help I have received from everyone. Om Amriteshwariye Namah :Ekanath PS: Best method for me is walking meditation but I fear of falling sleep - kiddin'!
