Guest guest
Indian Railways (IR) India's state-owned rail monopoly have some interesting names for their passenger trains. Many trains have Sanskrit names, or are named after Hindu deities. For a list of some of the train names, go to: http://www.geocities.com/irfca_faq/faq-number.html#name There is an IR train called the ***Amrita Express***, running between Palghat town and Trivandrum. It is named of course after Ammachi!! Has anyone on this list ever traveled on this train? I presume you could take it to Amritapuri? Jai Ma! Guest guest
Dear Keval, The closest train station to Amritapuri is at Kayamkulam, which I believe is about 12 km. away. I've taken the train from there to Khozikode (Calicutt) and back, but not to Trivandrum. The last few miles/km require some negotiation with taxi drivers, rickshaw-wallahs and ferry boatmen. I am also a rail fan (I am on an Indian Railway Fan Club ). My '95 north India pilgrimage was as much a railfan's dream as a spiritual journey. I am not planning to visit Amritapuri anytime soon. But a return visit to India, particularly Tamil Nadu and Kerala, is on my long-term to-do list. And maybe a real long-haul train ride, like the Delhi-Madras Grand Trunk Express. Jai Ma! I wanted to take it when I was at the ashram but my schedule was just too tight. I also see you are in Toronto. I was at a Train Show in Toronto about a year or so ago and chatted with one man and his young son who were displaying his models of Indian railroads. Was that, by chance, you? I lived in Toronto for many years. Now, I'm in the sunny land of Florida. I'm modeling the Santa Fe across the Texas panhandle in 1967. Om Amrtesvaryai Namah. My longest train ride in India was the Mahanagari Express from Varanasi to Bombay. Made even longer by being more than 3 hours late arriving at Victoria Terminus. The Delhi-Madras Grand Trunk Express was one of the train journeys featured on a National Geographic program, circa 1994, "The Great Indian Railway". I taped this program off my local PBS station (WNED, channel 17, in Buffalo NY). It still airs on PBS from time to time - check your local listings. Also from National Geographic - the June 1984 issue cover story is all about Indian Railways. Great cover photo of a steam engine in front of the Taj Mahal. > > I also see you are in Toronto. They don't name sports teams in Florida the Hurricanes, Heat, and Lightning for nothing Maybe they can write a bhajan "Riding on the Amrita Express" like the "City of New Orleans" song (In 1989 I actually rode on the City of New Orleans, re-enacting that old Arlo Guthrie song).
