Om Amriteshwariye Namah

I always composed prayers, songs and names of Gods right from my early years,

here is something popped up in my head for Amma during last few minutes:

Amma Gayatri:

Om Sudhamani Vighmahe,

Atmaramaye Dhimahi

Tanno Devyai Prachodayate

================

fyi: last night I accidently found this Shirdi Sai Gayatri from

www.saibaba.org site, this is really good and this directly pointed / connected

me with the Shirdi Sai.

Om Shirdi Wasaye Vighmahe

Sat ChitAnandaye Dhimahi

Tanno Sai PrachoDayate

===========

Om Namo Shivaye

Dilip -

Since your chants sound so similar to one I was taught a few years ago, maybe

you can tell me the translation (if you can do word for word as well as the

whole meaning, that would be great!).

Om

Sheshanagaya Vidhmahe

Dakshikaya Dhimahe

Tanno Kalaya Prachodayat Shreematay

Annantaya Nagarajay Namo Namah

Hari Om

I know it has something to do with Nagaraja, the king of the snakes, and Ananta,

same.

Also, this one:

Iradhakshura (??? not sure about this word) Padaabruhastam

Mantraheenam Tuyat (???) Bhavet(a)

Tat Sarvam

Shyamyatum (???) Deva

Narayana Namostute

Shreematay

Narayanaya Namo Namah

Hari Om

Again, I know this has something to do with Narayana, but not sure what. Some

of the words are hard to figure out their spelling and their correct

pronunciation, as the person who taught this to me didn't really know Sanskrit

very well. Thanks for any and all help!

Blessings,

Achintya

For those posting Sanskrit prayers,

it might help others if you give a better

transliteration, especially the most

common mistake and most easily correctable

mistake: the vowel "aa/A" (aaahh)

versus "a" (uh).

>From my limited knowledge and experience

with Sanskrit, I think your last line

has incorrect grammar, and should be

"Tanno Devi Prachodayaat" note the

Devi instead of Devyai. Many times

changing the last letter to the "e"

sound makes it a calling word, as

Amma to Amme! (uhmmay!)

Some newbies will pronounce "Jai" (Jai Maa)

like "Sai" (Sai Baba) when they're actually

2 different sounds (Saayee, versus Juhyee or Jay).

Hence the need for decent transliteration,

although I've met very few that make the effort

to pronounce their a's correctly anyways.

It might help too, to give translations

of what you're invoking with these phases.

Incidently, an evening bhajan/puja

program I attended at a local temple

used the Sai Gayatri as dedicated to

SSB rather than the one below for some

reason.

I am far from a Sanskrit scholar, Connie, but I'm familiar with the

Gayatri form, which this sort of folows.

Dilip:

It's possible there are local variations in pronunciation, but the first

line of a Gayatri usually ends with the word <Vidmahe> (we envision).

You have <Vighmahe>, which I would guess means (we set obstacles).

[Compare Ganesha's name, <Vighnaraja> (King over Obstacles)]

Connie

Sorry I don't know the complete meaning myself but certainly it

refers to Narayan as you stated.

"Truth has to be realized, it cann't be stolen or imposed upon

anybody!" - references to Geeta and Bhagavatam
